It Was Written is prob the most underrated album ever, and that's only because it's in Illmatic's shadow

Also too, he went the commercial route with Trackmasters and Steve Stoute on a lot of that album which was the wave at the time. Nas already had the critical acclaim with Illmatic but not the big time sales to match. Enter the Big Willie Esco style. It took a while for people to forgive him for that.

But his lyrics and flow were flawless on that album. :ahh:

And he still had gems like:

I Gave You Power. :whew:

Black Girl Lost. :whew:

Silent Murder.
Shootouts.
Even the album intro with AZ :wow:

people bring up 3 Feet & Stakes is High as GOAT contenders but this here to me is better than both and one of the best group projects that you'll ever hear in Hip Hop

That is an elite album but I'm still taking stakes over it

Yeah, but they aren't usually the first mention when people think classics, which fits the OP's title.

Sometimes an artist's previous work overshadows said album. (Illmatic and It Was written.....Amerikkka's Most, Death Certificate and then Predator, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, Voodoo...then Black Messiah)

With the Infamous. So many classic albums were released the year of late 94 going into 95. You are talking about Biggie, Wu Solo albums (Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords) , etc. They are usually the first mentioned, and maybe not Infamous.

With the way DMX's life has gone downhill, people forget how big It's Dark and Hell is Hot was at the time.

With Dogg Food, the climate shifted. Death Row was THE label with Snoop, Dre, and Above the Rim soundtrack. By the time Dogg Food dropped, the East came back with Biggie, Nas, and Wu.

Not to mentioned the Dogg Food's run was sandwiched in between Snoop and Dre's enormous success and Pac's time on Death Row with All Eyez and 7 day theory. It is easy for it to get lost in conversation of Classic GOAT albums.

Maybe in mainstream media but everyday people love all those albums and they are highly praised still
