In March, the stock market was in free fall.

And the resulting legislation aimed to correct that and provide money for people who are unemployed.

No way the current dem caucus in the house would be on board with what's being suggested.

Most of the ire for Pelosi should be reserved for Schumer IMO.

He should be leveraging his position to get some of these very good bills in the house to be taken up.

They had leverage with the CARES act and they blew it. Republicans aren’t as desperate now. It’s not just her and Schumer. There’s plenty of blame to go around within the party.

Pelosi did leverage the Republican need to bail out corporations and business for an additional 600/week and increasing the thresholds on stimulus checks.

Despite the rhetoric, I have to agree with @the cac mamba that people have been happy with that number and want to extend it.

Gotta take your wins heading into the election.

I agree with you about Schumer. But Nancy could have passed a better bill before the Cares Act was even formulated to make McConnell defensive.

$600 a week unemployment actually was from the Dems in the Senate. Michael Bennett in particular. Then it snowballed from there.

I get where you're going but the initial government response by the executive branch was so delayed and so bad they just had to get something out.

Yea, I was just referring to her strong defense of that proposal which I believe helped get it through.
HuffPost is now a part of Verizon Media

To be fair, that does give credence to your initial point that she could have been more aggressive.

All in all, I think most of us agree. She isn't a strictly principled leader nor an ideologue. She tends to go wherever the party goes. In theory I agree with this as it strikes at the heart of what the leader of a representative democracy should be -- willing to compromise across the wants of your constituency. Unfortunately, she's up against an ideologue like McConnell and someone as dogmatic as Trump.

She is an ideologue. She is a deficit hawk.
I'm not sure I buy that. She was big on that during the Obama administration and that was also something he seemed to be big on was well.

But under this stint as speaker she's been blowing the deficit up left and right.

Even threatened to shutdown the government if we didn't increase spending.

And then pushed against spending when we need money during this pandemic. That’s the point this article is making. She wanted more spending to have a functional government which Trump and GOP don’t want.

I get that she wants more spending, but framing it as Pelosi being a deficit hawk seems misplaced considering over half of the 2 trillion dollar package is money that won't be recouped as seen below.

The Anatomy of the $2 Trillion COVID-19 Stimulus Bill

Further she's spoken out again the GOP wanting to strip functional public services to offset their wasteful tax cuts.

Pelosi Statement on President Trump’s FY2020 Budget Request

Pelosi obviously doesn't prescribe to MMT and pushes the common sense government spending ideology that most Americans have to adhere to in their personal life.

Are we really making the argument that the world's largest economy isn't able to afford its social programs? :francis:

She's also calling for another trillion in aid fwiw. :yeshrug:

Perfection is the enemy of progress

I don’t understand how anyone can fix their fingers to blame Pelosi for something during this pandemic
