This might be a dumb question, but do you guys consider this a Nas album or a collaborative album like the Freddie Gibbs/Alchemist stuff? Seems like it could fall into both categories.

to my knowledge, NaS never had a solo album album billed as a collaboration so unless it says NaS & DJ Premier on the cover, i won't consider it one and don't see why anybody would...

The Hit-Boy produced album weren't billed as Nas & Hit-Boy but Define My Name is billed as Nas & DJ Premier :

I guess it depends on your definition of "collaborative album".

I dont think anyone considers 4:44 a collaborative album. Same with LL's last album.

Unless Preme is going to be dropping bars on this album (lol), it's a solo Nas album in my book. Something like Distant Relatives is what I consider a true collaborative album.

With that said, I get the other side of the argument.

I guess I'm asking because the selling point of this album is that DJ Premier is producing the whole thing. You could call it a Nas album and people will obviously listen to it, but Premier's name is being advertised alongside Nas, so it seems to be more of a collaborative album like The Auditorium or Alfredo.

The Hit-Boy albums could fall into that, but him producing everything was never used as a selling point. It just so happens that he was the sole producer, but it was always Nas getting the promotion by himself. And a Premier album holds a lot more weight than a Hit-Boy album, so the rules are different.

Most of us remember seeing the cover of Mass Appeal with the two of them on it promising an album. The fact that Nas owns Mass Appeal now and we’re actually getting the album is really bringing it full circle

When I get the CD, I'm going to put it in line with my Nas solo albums despite the billing. I did the same with the Common/Pete Rock album. I have Distant Relatives next to the Nas albums but separate with The Firm disc.

It's a collaborative album since Nas isn't making the music, just like Thriller was, but the package didn't say Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones presents.

and if that was the case, they'd make it into a group with a group name like Royce did with Preme for PRhyme

I get it though, we in a streaming era and putting the two names first nowadays is so the streams count on both artist. That's why you don't really see "Featuring" on singles anymore, it's more like "Gucci Mane x J.Cole" or "Travis Scott X Drake" so that way it appears on both their accounts as a MAIN SINGLE. Same as the Album.

Funnily enough this thread made me want to play The Auditorium and track 11 says "Featuring Pete Rock." Which is weird for an album billed as both of them.
