As Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation opens this weekend, the debate over how he could've better handled the fallout from resurfaced 1999 college rape accusations against him is only heating up. Now, it has come to light that one of the most influential people on the planet tried to advise Parker at the outset of the controversy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah Winfrey suggested that Parker do an interview with her best friend Gayle King on CBS to discuss the allegations shortly after they were dug up. (Oprah was one of the first to screen Birth and had praised both the film and Parker on Instagram.) However, Parker was reportedly so "angry" that the charges he'd been acquitted of were being discussed at all that he turned down her help. Since then, Winfrey hasn't uttered another word about Birth or Parker, proving why you never, ever say no to Oprah.

Sources also tell THR that Fox Searchlight, the studio that bought Birth for a record sum, hired a team of PR experts and consultants that included retired NFL player and sexual-violence activist Don McPherson to get Parker "on message," to no avail. “They gave him talking points and he just didn’t execute,” says the source.

I get where dude was coming from. You making a big move and people dig up the worst moment of your life and you just want it to die but it's still there and you don't want to do damage control on it and make it grow bigger. You're planning on your move over powering it and making it fade away.

But Oprah being a OG in the game and knowing it's going to end up getting your movie sidetracked is trying to low key tell you that you need to jump in front of it. Seeing how Oprah only hates two things, black men and rapist. If she's reaching out to help you on that then you should do that.

He, like any other sane man that stood trial and was found innocent, thought he had nothing to worry about and could defend himself by pointing to the aforementioned trial and his lack of criminal history. He must of forgot that you don't need to be convicted of anything in this country. Poor fool

Good for Nate. As if Oprah's help would of done anything, the outrage is fake... ppl are pretending to be outraged.

The man was found innocent, what the fukk is there to talk about???

Nate is not obligated to accept help from Oprah. Oprah is just mad Nate denied her an opportunity on getting her hands on a hot topic.
