All these shows portray Black people in a vacuum. You'd never watch one of these shows and hear a debate about MLK vs. Malcolm X or W.E.B. DuBois vs. Marcus Garvey. Or the validity/justification of the Black Panthers. You'll never see Black parents try to talk their kids down from going out and protesting after a police officer shoots their best friend. So no I won't be watching. This is Black people the way White people want them to be: neutered, weak and servile.
Yeah, I don’t think they'd put any of that stuff in a sitcom.

There are shows with Black people dealing with serious issues. What about Shots Fired? Or When They See Us? Or 13th?

I just wish he woulda chosen a different lead cause the half white wife is too close to Bow. Wonder how he gonna tell her story without it being too similar of characters.
So it seems like a more ballin version of Blackish.

From what i’ve read I think this is a version of Kenya Barris’s real life, which is why he’s starring in it. Black-ish also had semi-autobiographical elements to it.

I’m intrigued. I’ll give it a watch. I stopped watching Black-ish a minute ago because I honestly think it ran out of gas. I fukks with Grownish though and i’m a studier of black Auteur driven projects so i’m interested to see what Kenya has up his sleeves

I probably won't be watching. I don't know why they can't produce a simple normal Black show. I was listening to someone on Roland Martin's youtube channel debate the whole Kobe thing and she made a very poignant point. The average Black male perspective is never portrayed in our society. I'm happy for the Black actors in this show, but I've seen it before. In fact, not only have I seen it, I've lived it. Crazy how there were more authentic Black characters on tv during the 90s than there are now. I'm so tired of these goofy shows. And I'm tired of Black people and Black families being whitewashed for American culture. That's why I decided to read more books. You watch to much shyt like this and you start to conform to what popular society wants Black people to be. I'll start paying attention to mainstream Black shows when they are willing to show us as real human beings. Reminds me of James Baldwin's essay, "Everybody's Protest Novel." Crazy how Black people just being themselves can't get on tv. Like why are there no tv shows about gentrification or institutional racism or a Black family that goes to a white neighborhood and refuses to conform?

All these shows portray Black people in a vacuum. You'd never watch one of these shows and hear a debate about MLK vs. Malcolm X or W.E.B. DuBois vs. Marcus Garvey. Or the validity/justification of the Black Panthers. You'll never see Black parents try to talk their kids down from going out and protesting after a police officer shoots their best friend. You must never watch blackish. It has tackled a lot of what you’re asking for.

Why they all sound so corny and annoying though. :dwillhuh: wonder what the woke-meter on this will be. Is Black Ish worth a watch brehs :jbhmm:

From the 2-3 episodes I've seen it's definitely an attempt to portray the Black perspective to a White audience. It's basically an educational show for open but naive White people to learn something. That being said, they do it pretty well and it's definitely funny at times just watching Anthony Anderson's character deal with the world. All the other characters are just tolerable to me. I'm not the kind of person that watches sitcoms but I'd watch more episodes.

Yeah that's too woke. Blackish and Grownish it is. :francis:

Nothing will ever surpass the Cosby Show. :wow:

Yeah more like fake woke

In Hollywood, there's like 2 types of Black shows

1. A Black show that is able to attract a national audience

2. A show that attracts a national audience, that happens to have Black people in it

This show is the latter
This is why I have Blavity trash. Perfect example of a show that is too scared to scared to challenge the status quo, have that "post racial society" feel to it, and relies on being safe and making white people comfortable

You could literally switch the cast and put white people as the main characters on this show and it wouldn't miss a beat

I’ve always thought blackish is black people entertaining white people or people who hang/ grew up around white people. It’s like, black people incorporating white people into the black lifestyle and not black people just being black. There’s a big difference between living single and blackish. Blackish has that please accept us vibe. The “we’re just people/ all lives matter” vibe. Yeah it’s black but it’s not my type of black. But I’ve only watched a handful of episodes so I don’t want to assume too much, lol. Maybe one day I’ll sit down and watch.
