Artificial intelligence may stop Netflix account sharing

A new artificial intelligence programme may be set to upset a lot of freeloading Netflix customers and help the video streaming company gains billions of dollars in lost revenue.

Currently, Netflix customers can share their password with friends and family, but new software from a United Kingdom start-up Synamedia looks ready to put an end to that by determining where users are logging into their accounts, reports 7News.

Introduced at the 2019 Consumers Electronic Show, the AI allows streaming sites to understand the behaviour of users, including seeing if their account is being accessed in different locations away from where the user typically views Netflix content.

Up to 35 percent of millennials share passwords for streaming sites according to a study by media research firm Magid. A Parks Associate study found nearly NZD1.8 billion is lost to account sharing each year.

Synamedia's chief technology officer, Jean-Marc Racine, said an example of patterns they are looking out for is when one subscriber is streaming content on the East Coast of the United States while also viewing from the West Coast.

He said while in extreme cases accounts could be deleted, users will typically be encouraged to upgrade to a multi-user subscription.

Businesses making money off streaming certain programmes to large groups, such as in bars or at viewing parties could also be caught up by the AI.

how would it really know?

let's say I watch netflix at home 99.9% of the time on my smart tv or whatever. How the hell would they differentiate my smart phone/tablet while i'm not at home and not block me

Devices. Some companies lock accounts that way instead of by IP. You register a set amount of devices so no matter where you are in the world as long as you're on that specific device it works. In order to register a new device to the account you'd have to unregister another.

This may be how they do it.

I see what you saying, but how would they prevent sharing, since you could just register your friend's device as a safe one

By limiting numbers. For example - 1 single person subscription (non multi-user subscription) = 5 devices. Give the device slots up however you see fit.

1. Main TV
2. Bedroom TV
3. Your laptop
4. Girl's laptop
5. Your phone

Or any other configuration (kids, mother etc.)

In order to add another device you're gonna have to unregister one of the above. Or get a multi-user sub which bumps you up from 5 registered devices to 10/15.

Let's see how much you love your friends when you've gotta unregister your bedroom TV Netlfix account so they can watch :patricelol:

Plus you can only register/unregister a set amount of times a month/year.

Wouldn't need AI to implement this. According to the article, they'll be taking into account location.
