Dawg, a background check only hurts you if you LIE about having a felony on your record.

You don’t have to be concerned about a background check if you’re being FORTHRIGHT about your background from the get-go, that’s the point.

This ain’t about trying to get over on an employer by concealing your past, it’s about not being precluded from even getting a call-back JUST because you checked a box.

Hell, they not even GIVING fools background checks if they see that box checked on the application, you not even getting that far….this at least gives you a fighting chance to explain your side.

Cause not every employer is the same….and if they were gonna be prejudiced against you REGARDLESS of whether or not you checked a box, why would you want to work for a company like that anyway? :what:
All you have to do is look at a reddit recruiter AMA. Felons are at a huge disadvantage whether they lie or not.

I think for certain jobs, yeah, felons might want to lower certain expectations, simply because the current economy dictates that the candidate pool is gonna be deep such that you don’t have to “settle” (if you will) for hiring a felon. It’s exclusionary, but it’s just logical.

But for labor jobs, skill trades and such, though….that’s a goldmine. Cause they gon’ work hard as hell for you, for that check.

Preclusion hurts the whole community….but of course, group continuation is immaterial to most corporations.

I never knew why that checkbox option was ever on an application in the first place. It should have read:

Have you ever been convicted of a felony?

No: continue on, your future is looking very bright

Yes: Stop here, no way you are working here, kill yourself thug. Thanks for wasting paper and the employee's time for even handing this to you in the first place.

Once upon a time, I was a grocery store manager and I saw this all the time. Felon? look elsewhere.

:heh:

Basically.

I like the premise behind the legislation....you let them get to the final interview process and then ask them THERE. Let them tell you in their own words what they went to prison for, and then gauge your response and reaction off of THAT.

When you automatically preclude them because they checked a damn box, you're potentially missing out on a valuable employee.

Hell, while we're at it, why can't ex-cons VOTE? If they paid their debt to society, why are you still penalizing them?
If blacks are filling up prisons, why would they want more black folks voting?
