SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A handful of new laws and policies start July 1 in California, including some that are sure to catch your attention.

The DOT Cocktail Lounge in Barrio Logan was ready to go, stocked with the supplies to comply with a new California law requiring bars and clubs to now offer customers a lid when requested.

The new safety measure aims to combat drinks being spiked. Businesses are able to charge a reasonable fee for the lids as well.

“If you go to Starbucks, you get a coffee, the cup comes with a lid. It’s not like you’re going to go broke trying to protect someone from feeling as though their drink will be tarnished. You’re just doing what you have to do to make sure everyone is having a good time,” said owner Philanzo King.

King is well-acquainted with the evolving state laws. Just last year establishments had to post signage and be ready to provide drug-testing kits to patrons.

“We keep them inside the register and available on a daily basis for any customer that may feel as though they need to use one, although we’ve never had a case where a customer felt they needed a testing kit,” explained King.

This change applies to establishments with a type 48 liquor license that predominantly focus on alcohol sales.
