The mask is there to block your orifices from pumping out covid particles, especially the big ones. The small ones are still passing. But the guy with no mask on is still bombarding you with all his particles and you're absorbing a lot of them.

You're actually getting somewhere with this and that's where physics/chemistry come into play.

Methane (the smelly gas in farts) is measured in picometers (10^-12 meters) while the droplets that coronaviruses travel in are measured in micrometers (10^-6 meters). As you can see the droplets are 6 orders of magnitude larger than gases hence the reason gases can pass through your jeans (err masks for the analogy) while the droplets can't.
