Never understood the point of private profiles on social networking sites...

If you wanna keep posts hidden or whatever, fine, but to have profiles un-viewable goes against the point of social networking does it not?

I don't mean a private profile, necessarily, but that as an option. I mean, I own what I put on there, my info isn't sold or recorded for 72 years, and everything pops up over the net. The last thing I need is to type my name and see everything I've ever written. I liked their privacy settings before, you could be found but it wasn't plastered everywhere.
