The flagship university, UMass Amherst, only had a population of 4% Black students. You take out immigrants and athletes and that number shrinks even further. It was more black graduate students of both genders than black male undergraduates who were not immigrants or athletes.

Are the children of immigrants not supposed to do well in high school and attend college ?

It’s hard to get ahead to be honest

You can take ten steps forward and all it takes us something like Donald Trumps stupidity, a pandemic, a bad girlfriend or a bad boss to push you 20 steps back lol

This life shyt is something else. Most ppl just trying to survive and stay out of trouble let alone get ahead

Not saying that at all; in Mass there is a large immigrant population, and a lot of the Black students who are getting access to the top tier colleges are descendants of them. So even the representation being shown on campus is not a reflection of the states demographics.

I guess what I am saying is that African American boys are being left even further behind than the rest of other black and brown boys.

Springfield MA is like 20 miles away from UMass and is like 25-30% black; why do less than 100 black students in all 4 classifications (seniors juniors etc) call Springfield home?

I worked as a residence director up there so I saw the discrepancy firsthand

I understand you, and get your overall point.

I would think that clear lines like that would be hard to mark in that state. Black immigrant groups (CV, English Caribbean) have been present in Mass. for over 100 years. Would imagine that in 2025, there's a sizable % of the Black population that has both AA and immigrant ancestry.

The achievement gap and discrepancies regarding education are always troubling when discussed here. Even in states with well functioning public school system (MA), or in areas with pockets of high earning Black households (MD), those gaps and discrepancies are there.
