Will NFL and NHL lose tax exemption? White House reviewing the idea
    [IMG]

"Professional sports organizations aren't fooling anybody," Chaffetz said in a statement announcing his introduction of the measure.

He said organizations such as the NFL and the NHL "are not charities nor are they traditional trade organizations."

"They are for-profit businesses and should be taxed as such," he said.

It would have been a political blow to the NFL on Super Bowl weekend, were the White House to have said it supports the tax-exemption elimination bill.

Citing analysis by the Joint Committee on Taxation, eliminating the tax exemption for major professional sports leagues "would increase federal revenues by $109 million over 10 years."

A similar bill was introduced in the last Congress but never got out of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Two Days Before Super Bowl, The NFL’s Status As A Nonprofit Is Challenged
In the New York State Senate and U.S. Congress, lawmakers try to put an end to the league’s tax-exempt status.

According to reports, Commissioner Roger Goodell earned $44.2 million in 2012, which included his $3.5 million salary and a $40 million bonus.

Politicians looking to fight the NFL’s tax-exempt status face a major hurdle: The league spends more than $1 million annually on lobbyists to help it retain privileges like its tax-exempt status.

This season has been a turning point for the public perception of the NFL, though. Goodell’s handling of the Ray Rice domestic assault incident hung over the league through the season; Adrian Peterson was charged with felony child abuse, though he plead guilty to a lower charge; key players were suspended for outdated drug policies; and now, the New England Patriots are being investigated for cheating during the AFC Championship game.

During a news conference on Friday, Goodell told the crowd that it has been a year of learning and adversity for him. He says the league has gone through a “year of humility.”

I always thought it was absurd that the NFL could use volunteers for the Super Bowl when they're generating hundreds of millions in revenue.

Its almost time to cash out on the NFL.

This concussion issue and post-career quality of life issue isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Someone educate me, what taxes is the government missing out on?

According to Goodell's letter, teams are taxed on their profits (so I assume that includes tickets, TV deals, apparel, licensing), so what taxes are being missed?
