NFL: Is drafting a late round pick in 2013 >>> drafting a late rnd pick 20 years ago?

and by late round I mean anything 3rd round and beyond.

Seems like you see alot of late round players(or even undrafted) these days contributing or turning into stars in the NFL.

Just off the top of my head, I dont remember this being as prevalent back in the day. But I was also a kid then....

Thoughts?

thats the answer to this thread

its still the same. Probably better back than to today because of how advanced scouting is now.

considering the popularity of the sport of football in general being at its highest ever...wouldnt the pool of talent on average from draft to draft in the last decade be deeper than decades ago. cmon now

I didnt say the pool wouldnt be bigger

I said players slipped through the cracks because scouting wasnt as advanced as it is now.

idk, I bet a lot of guys slipped through back then, especially from smaller schools.

Also there were more rounds back in the day.

The Redskins won a super bowl in 1982 with late round picks and undrafted free agents

I bet you remember the 1983 Draft :troll: :old: but naw seriously the talent pool is deeper.Back in the day they focus on the 1st round alot (Class of 83) but now when you talk about drafts you talk about mainly quarterbacks, just like last year that draft might be known as the draft of the quarterbacks (Luck,RGIII,Wilson)etc

Yahh, years ago anything after the 3rd round had a 59-65 rating. Nowadays you're getting stuff in the 74+ all the way into the 6th rounds

:what:

We talking real life, not madden.

it's about the same today, maybe slightly better cause scouts probably have it much easier with the internet and social networking.

I would say so, because a late round pick from 20 years ago has gotta be in his mid-40's now. A late round pick from this year would help a lot more.

other way around, its harder to get a steal nowadays, harder for good talents to slip through the cracks...

Advanced scouting makes it more difficult. Teams have all charted out draft values. He'll fullbacks used to go in the first round along with blocking tight ends. Guys like Tommy Vardell or Kyle Brady wouldn't be first rounders nowadays.

Personally scouting is much better. They really knows what works and what doesn't. They have a lot more resources as well and the talent pool is better.

I am not sure about that. With teams not needing QB's as much, it's easier to find QB's. Dominique Davis was an UDFA and his skill-set is crazy good. I think you can still find steals just as much as in the 80's and 90's.
