Civil Rights movement Pioneer, loyal to those who were loyal to him. Marketing genius, ahead of his time..always took care of his players, always concerned for their parents. I salute this man and one of my most cherished memories as a sports fan is being able to be at the last home game he ever attended before his death. Watching his 1980 Gordon Gecko stylin limo with the motorcade was some sh.t

RIP Al Davis

For all your crazy moves during the last decade of your life, you will still be remembered as one of the main reasons why I am a Raider fan for life and will bestow that honor and pain to my seed.

The NFL would not be what it is today w/o his contribution to the civil rights movements and equality for black players during the 60s.

Yeah its crazy how they always paint him to be some villain like he wasn't influential in making the NFL the real American past time just because he was never on some yes sir shyt with the NFL. He went crazy in the old man years but who hasn't?

I really wanted him to win that Superbowl against Tampa cause I knew he would've grab the trophy and the mic and cut a ric flair like promo with the commissioner standing right there like :merchant:

 Where did this come from

if you know al davis, you know that he was always concerned for his people's family. if you watched the episode, matt millen clearly explains that and if you ever watched his press conferences (which you obviously didn't), he always started with some off the wall "how is your mother?" and not as a jab, cuz he really cared.

it has to do with his father passing and being told by his brother. he never had the chance to tell his father thank you for the principle that was instilled on him since a young boy..

the way he said he came up with bump and run coverage by watching the famous UCLA press of John Wooden's team was genius and cool.

I watched Superbowl 18 in full the other day, and John Madden and Pat Summerall were doing the game. They cut away to show Art Shell who was an assistant coach for the Raiders. And at a time when there were no African American head coaches Madden says "Art Shell will be a head coach someday." Al probably told him he wanted Shell to coach the Raiders years before he made him the first African American coach in modern history.

yup, he did it his way. for all the bad, what he did for black players as well as coaches was revolutionary. I think it's so stupid that they call the requirement of interviewing black coaches the "Rooney Rule". It was obvious Rooney hated Davis and to name it after somebody other than Davis is a slight to Al and his achievements.

It's just sad that his relationship with Marcus Allen was so acrimonious... that was when he truly showed his insecurity... and from there it kind of snowballed.

but most cats are too young to care about the impact Al Davis had on today's game.

Did you see the Marcus Allen Football Life? Marcus kind of danced around the reason for the fallout, and Al Davis did the same over the years as well.

On a positive note during the AFL beginning years he was one of the first to go down to HBCU's and recruit players. People laughed at his drafting techniques but those same ideas built the Raiders into one of the greatest franchises throughout the late 60s to mids 80s. He failed to change with the times, I guess.

Yeah I saw the Marcus Allen joint, it was real good. I think there was some blame to go around to both parties but Marcus Allen remained the consummate Pro even when he was a Fullback.

Al's stubbornness was both his greatest trait and greatest flaw. He was one of those you have to take the bad with the good. I got to a point where it was intolerable for a lot of us fans during the final few years of his life... to the point where I personally boycotted spending any money on them... but I just hope that his Family can put together a good front office and coaching staff to propel the team into the 21st century.

yeah you got that right. he grew up in a diverse area and stood up for what was right and wrong.

he said he emulated the Yankees and Dodgers foundation and philosophy as his basis for running the Raiders

Norfeast groovin…
Remember seeing it when it came out. :salute:

Its crazy, but I think as the league started to change those advantages that made the Raiders what they were either were put to an end or everyone got in on the action. Al built arguably the GOAT offensive line and two of the most important parts were from HBCU's but once teams recognized how great black players were and how genius Al was for picking them they all followed up to where that wasn't an advantage. Free Agency put an end to those teams that stick together for years and years like the 70s Steelers, Raiders, etc so that camaraderie that you see with the OG Raiders couldn't be recreated like it used to.

With all that said, Al was one of the most brillant minds in all of sports. nikkaz just don't know how many of his innovations we see in today's league. And real talk for any Raider fan the last years were unspeakable agony because all of us became fans ultimately due to all the work Al put in to make the team what it is for us. So to see what was happening fukked our collective minds up. He deserved to age gracefully and victorious, but he was still stubborn and still the warrior of his youth and it ain't work out. smh, I just hope his family can make this team what it was in Al's better times. RIP to the Godfather of Pro Football.

Rotten Apple
"The other team's quarterback must go down..and he must go down hard".

"Other teams say we are gonna take what the defense gives us. We're gonna take what we want".

"We came out the huddle and we weren't looking for first downs we were looking for touchdowns".

"Its Number 1 to say you wanna do it. Its number 2 to say you have the players to do it but it's number 3 to do it.

To do it on 1st down of any football game".

:smugbiden:

I love Al
