Poll finds anthem protests hurting NFL ratings

A variety of factors are leading to fans watching NFL games for fewer minutes this season, but a poll taken this week suggests that protests over the national anthem are the most dominant factor.

In a Seton Hall Sports Poll released Thursday, 56 percent of those surveyed said they believed fans are watching less because of the stand athletes are taking by not standing during the national anthem.

"It is somewhat remarkable that the impact of the national anthem protest seems to hold, given that the action occurs pre-game and isn't even televised," said poll director Rick Gentile.

At NFL owners meetings last week, commissioner Roger Goodell told the media that he didn't believe actions taken during the anthem, started by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to garner attention to what he says is racial inequality and police brutality, were one of the reasons why ratings fell about 11 percent as compared to the first six weeks of last season.

Other factors that fans cited as a reason why people were watching fewer minutes of football were: the presidential election (50 percent), oversaturation of games (44 percent), focusing on postseason baseball (39 percent) and head injuries and the decline of play (33 percent).

Seton Hall says the was taken this week from a statistically representative sample of 841 adults in the U.S.

It's getting to the point where I'm just going to watch the games, I'm not watching or reading anything else connected to sports. This article is a straight hit piece. You mean to tell me the presidential election, the lack of good games on prime time, and the fact playoff baseball and fall season of TV aren't the main reason for the drop in ratings? fukk this country

Not only that, but something that isn't even televised that only people attending niners games can see is? Sure, that's the reason and not the poor quality of product and lack of marketable stars :dead:

I won't even blame oversaturation. The games have been awful this year. Especially a lot of the primetime games. Tonight's game is going to be extra :flabbynsick:.

Eagles vs Cowboys should give a big ratings boost.

Yeah should've mentioned the Thursday night games to me that shyt was always reserved for CFB and all that has done is water down the Thursday slate of CFB games because ESPN don't wanna get crushed in the ratings so now we get these UCF vs ECU jobber games instead of getting some top 10-15 Thursday games.

It's a daily sport NFL needs to breathe and leave the Thursdays alone by the time Monday comes I'm footballed out these days. Thursday/Saturday CFB Sunday/Monday NFL. NBA and NHL can play at anytime its regular season obviously doesn't matter and truthfully we only get 3 nights of national games weekly of NBA until January/February no one is clamoring for Week 2 Thursday night football that shyt is cool late in season the way we used to get those Saturday afternoon games post CFB season in December.
