She is talking about immigrant success in the US even though it sounds like people are using it as a global signifier of success. I need to read the book but for the most part immigrants are a positively selected like Cenk said, in present times you do not just pack your bags and show up to the US unless you are coming in for education, jobs or maybe opening a business. Unless you are a refugee where there is a lot less education based selections you are not actually getting a broad based selection of the general population.
