Night mode 'better sleep' claims are nonsense, says university | ZDNet

"To reduce this blue light emission and the strain on eyes, Apple introduced an iOS feature called Night Shift in 2016; a feature that adjusts the screen's colors to warmer hues after sunset. Android phones soon followed with a similar option, and now most smartphones have some sort of night mode function that claims to help users sleep better."

To test these claims, BYU carried out a study. It took 167 "emerging adults (ages 18-24; 71.3% female)" and randomly assigned them to one of three groups. One group used an iPhone with Night Shift enabled for an hour before bedtime for seven consecutive nights, another used an iPhone without Night Shift for the seven consecutive nights, and another avoided smartphone use for the last hour before bedtime.

The conclusion?

There were no differences in sleep outcomes attributable to Night Shift.

On top of that, for those with normal sleep patterns, avoiding screen during that final hour resulted in better quality sleep than using an iPhone with Night Shift enabled did.

I thought it was for less eye strain(which is true).

But no screens an hour before bed is ideal.

All that light messes with your carcadium rhythm.

LEDs have a spike in the blue spectrum regardless the displayed color. You have to put a physical filter over the screen to truly filter out blue. What they're doing while using the phone also matters.

But yea reducing screen time before bed would be the biggest help.

Your best bet is to just buy some books and start reading. Put the phone down, shyt is tough to do.:francis:
What I did was buy a really short charging cable so that my phone can't be plugged in and used in bed at the same time.

It's helped so far. Once the phone starts dying and I plug it in it's too far to keep using and I go to sleep earlier

I usually do too. The problem is gettin me to put the phone down. I'm losing sleep with my mindless scrolling

Yeah my phone is killing my sleep.:snoop: So much shyt I be doing. The coli, looking up car & motorcycle reviews, and don't let me go on the deep end history. Then I be tired the next morning, so I can't jog like I promised and I skip gym:francis: I told myself I'd be in bed by 9 from here on out.

Matter of fact, I might hit up Barnes & Noble, find me a good book.

I made it a habit to essentially put the phone down after 11 pm for the most part. I'll leave it on in the case of an work or personal emergency, but I just take my eyes off a screen after 11 for the most part.

Ooh, that reminds me of another thing that I did that's pretty helpful is turn on Bedtime/Do Not Disturb after a certain time.

It will still allow notifications for contacts that you whitelist, but block and silence a others until the morning.

You won't be distracted if your phone doesn't beep or vibrate
