It's 2015. We may not have Hoverboards or flying cars, but we will get power laces.
In 1988, Tinker Hatfield created the futuristic Nike Air Mag sneaker for the film, Back To The Future II, which took place in 2015. They are one of the most iconic sneakers in history, and not only lit up, but auto-laced, a sneakerheads dream. In 2011, Nike released the Air Mag for the first time. 1,500 pairs were auctioned off, exclusively on eBay. While they were a perfect replication, one thing they were missing was the power laces feature.
Hatfield stated that the technology wasn't created yet, as it was not 2015. A few years later, he confirmed that Nike would release an auto-laced sneaker in 2015, after a patent for the Power Lace technology was filed by Nike. He did not state as to what shoe it would be featured on, leaving many skeptics to think it was either going to debut on an all-new sneaker or, the Back To The Future sneakers. In 2014, HalloweenCostumes.com released their own officially licensed costume version of the sneaker, minus Nike branding and without the auto-lace feature.
While speaking at the Agenda trade show in Long Beach on Monday, Tinker confirmed that power laces would debut in 2015 AND, they would be featured on the Nike Air Mag. Release information, pricing and availability have yet to be announced but Hatfield did say "there are still 11 and two-thirds months left in 2015," so be patient. Whenever Nike does debut the Air Mag to the public with power laces, expect them to be in a limited variety.
