Nikola Jokic has informed the Denver Nuggets he will decline their three-year, $212 million extension offer this offseason. Jokic can earn an additional $80 million by delaying an extension until the 2026 offseason.

The Nuggets had anticipated that Jokic would likely decline the offer.

“We’re definitely going to offer it,” KSE vice chairman Josh Kroenke said in June. “I’m not sure if he’s going to accept it or not, because we’re also going to explain every financial parameter around him signing now versus signing later. To be completely transparent, that’s the way we always are. And then he makes the best decision for himself and his family, and we’ll support him in it.”

Jokic has continued to play at an MVP level since leading the Nuggets to the championship in 2023. The Nuggets were eliminated in the second round each of the past two seasons. Jokic wanted the Nuggets to add depth to the team and he is reportedly pleased with their additions of Cam Johnson, Bruce Brown Jr., Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jonas Valanciunas.

where would the extra 80 m’s come from? Just an additional year tacked on, or would he make more each year

Both, he can sign a longer extension next year because he's closer to FA. The max deal is tied to a % of the cap, cap goes up, your $$$ goes up.

he's just setting himself up to get a significantly larger contract next summer. he ain't pressed at this point.
True but this also is a power play. Keeping your options open isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if things go south for the Nuggets. They have lost in the conference semis two years in a row...

this summer they traded for cam johnson and brought back bruce brown. they just need to get the backup C position sewed up, and they should be good to go. we will see next season I guess.

Even then, it's more lucrative for him to take the extension and then force his way out if he chooses to do so.

Has to be for monetary reasons more than anything.
