I like si-fi things like this. It would be interesting to see what someone from the late 40s thought about what the future would be like 40 years from then.

And the author finished writing the book in 1948 but switched the last 2 numbers around to give it a futuristic setting
Ah, thats why OP put 1948 at first....
he must have checked the wiki after and changed it to 1949 because that was the published date, and not the date it was finished being written.
