Super mario 3D world is quietly a good success for a non tentpole mario game.
Wii-U - 5.88 million copies
Switch - 9.40mm copies
it is one of the most fun mario games ever especially in coop. Its probably my favorite ever outside of Mario 3, 2, and World. I find it more fun than the Galaxy series or Odyssey.
