Nintendo's Wii U woes are well known by this point, but the Japanese company's latest move to expand its gaming reach is incredibly unexpected. Rather than pare down theexisting Wii U hardware for emerging markets, the outfit is developing entirely new consolesaccording to Bloomberg."We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have," company president Satoru Iwata said. "The product and price balance must be made from scratch." Curious about what Iwata meant by "cheaper versions?" Well, the 2DS and Wii Minimight offer hints in the direction.

Update: Iwata has told Reuters that Nintendo will offer the new hardware in countries like China, and that it'd be targeted toward those with lower income and less gaming experience

since no publicly traded company is interested in taking perpetual Ls, the real question is what is the pain point for investors? the fact that they are a japanese company has helped iwata keep his job longer than an american head of company would, but im sure the board still wants to see a new strategy and some good news

It wouldn't sell. Their negative reputation is practically set in stone at this point, so handhelds only are the way to go. They've dominated in that department for several years and show no signs of slowing down. Besides, would many people really buy a Nintendo console with realistic graphics over a PS5? Likely not, besides the relatively few people who still love their exclusives.

The current console race is a zero sum game. Chasing bigger and more powerful graphics isn't the direction gaming needs to go. I actually think this is a brilliant move by Nintendo.

They need to build a theme park as well. Focus on turning Nintendo to the Japanese version of Disney.
