No...I am saying that Nintendo set out and said "We want to make a console this way, with these games, and if the developers want to make games for our system then they will have to follow our guidelines" And that is what they did with the N64...and it was meh...and with the gamecube...and it a small failure...and with the wii...and it was a success...and with the wii u...and it is looking like a failure...and they will take the same approach with the next console

Unlike Sony and Microsoft...who just want to be the number 1 gaming console...so they will do whatever they think the market wants them to do...
Microsoft wanted to use DRM...and everyone complained...and Microsoft decided we not going to use DRM...

Sony did not have the PS4 support MP3's because they want to sell you music unlimited...and now people are complaining..."hey i can't add my own soundtrack to games cause the ps4 doesn't support mp3's"...and now sony is like "well if need be we can support mp3 in the future"...and nobody is buying that music unlimited shyt. How much you want to bet in the next 3 firmware updates for PS4 we get mp3 support?

Meanwhile everyone told Nintendo that mini disc were not the way to go for the gamecube and they said "yeah so what we like mini disk we are using them."

It is just a difference in philosophy...Nintendo makes consoles and games to make money...of course...but they want to make that money making their games, their way, on consoles designed, their way...

So basically they are refusing to change with the times and the way of growth of tech and consumer trends and interest. I find that similar to how record labels were during the napster era. I don't see that stubborn business model "us against the world" as being viable for very long. Even if they decide to lose money over the next ten years "their way" because 'they can afford to do it because they are Nintendo" it still serves no purpose. Also, this logic of "we have money so we can do it our way for years" is not intelligent by any means.

I think this idea of "well we are not like Microsoft are Sony" is somewhat weak when you consider "what they actually are" is not doing well for them with their newest console who as you said....they said "the Wii U is who we are" and it's failing.

Badly.

Nintendo Looking To "Harvest" 3DS Success To Avoid An "Unacceptable" Fourth Year Of Losses - 3DS News @ Nintendo Life

Nintendo Looking To "Harvest" 3DS Success To Avoid An "Unacceptable" Fourth Year Of Losses
Posted Thu 8th May 2014 03:00 by Damien McFerran

"We would like to retrieve 'Nintendo-like' profits as soon as possible"

In its recently-posted investor's briefing, Nintendo has revealed its plans for the near future and how it aims to turn around three years of consecutive operating losses. We've already heard about the proposed Nintendo Figurine Platform, but the company has much more in store as it attempts to move back into profit.

Managing Director Tatsumi Kimishima directly addresses the losses experienced over the past few years, and stated that a fourth year of losses would be "unacceptable":

Please let me comment on the operating losses for three consecutive years. Two and three fiscal years ago, the extremely strong yen and transition between our video game platforms mainly put our revenue and expenses off balance. For the last fiscal year, under the improved foreign currency exchange situation, we made various efforts to retrieve “Nintendo-like” profits. We, however, could not achieve these results as the sales of our main hardware and software products ended up being well below our forecasts, and we incurred temporary one-off expenses from the purchase of technology that we did not expect at the beginning of the fiscal year. I feel deeply responsible for this and I need to fulfill my responsibility by recovering the momentum of our business.

We would like to retrieve “Nintendo-like” profits as soon as possible. However, the success of a video game platform business depends greatly on its momentum, and it inevitably takes time to rebuild the business once the platform has lost its momentum.

Posting an operating loss for the fourth fiscal year running is something unacceptable. We see this fiscal year as a time to prioritize restoration of the balance of revenue and expenses.

Given the rather dismal position of the Wii U, it's perhaps unsurprising that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is looking to the 3DS to turn things around for the firm. The popular handheld continues to post impressive results and Iwata feels that the strong installed base achieved thus far will provide the ideal platform for financial success:

The installed base of Nintendo 3DS has already surpassed 43 million units, which is large enough to develop this platform business. By leveraging upon its large installed base, we are aiming to make this fiscal year a significant harvest year.

Nintendo 3DS already has a quality software lineup available now, many of these titles have been selling rather steadily even weeks or months after their respective release dates. Notable year-on-year sales growth has been observed especially in the Nintendo 3DS software sales overseas. The growth rate varies from country to country, but the software sales have grown by approximately 20 to 40 percent. By converting sales potential into actual sales, and by releasing strong titles periodically, we are aiming to sustain the momentum of the Nintendo 3DS business.

To do this, Nintendo is making sure that the console is blessed with as much quality third-party software as possible:

Out of approximately 34.22 million units of third-party software sold through in 2013 (excluding the ones from the three video game hardware manufacturers and Pokémon games), the platform on which those games sold the most was Nintendo 3DS, which captured 38 percent of the total sales units. In addition to the titles shown here, I hear there are many more titles under development, including unannounced ones. They have already taken advantage of the quickly expanding Nintendo 3DS installed base abroad for some of these titles. Nintendo has worked closely with these publishers and an increasing number of third-party Nintendo 3DS titles have shown results in the U.S. and Europe, including the Professor Layton series, Inazuma Eleven series and “BRAVELY DEFAULT.” By accelerating this trend, we would like to further grow the Nintendo 3DS business.

It's clear that the 3DS is a vital system in Nintendo's plans this year; with the Wii U failing to sell in the expected volumes, the Japanese veteran will be relying on its popular handheld more than ever. Titles like Tomodachi Life and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire will help, but can the 3DS maintain its momentum through 2014 and beyond?

They will continue to take losses as long as the Wii U is on shelves. There just isn't a big market for the hardware and its become pretty obvious that Nintendo really don't have a vision or ideas to justify the Blue Ocean strategy with its hardware. This number is kind of low when you consider how badly the console is selling, how Nintendo is still hiring like crazy to support 2 platforms due to them underestimating HD development, all those new buildings they just built in Tokyo, and resources thrown into whatever their "Quality of Life" product they they will reveal soon is.

They're in a jam though. Nintendo has to find an audience. Really soon. Right now they're in a weird spot between consumers that want cheap gaming experiences on tablets/smartphones and the console market that prefers what Sony/MS are offering. All that on top of their 3rd party relations and Iwata's conservative approach stunting their growth with things like embracing online gaming, etc and its definitely an uphill battle the next few years for them.

Like others have said they're going to have to eat crow in the console market for the next 2-3 years and hope they can offset losses with their handhelds. Too bad for them that that's a withering market. They might want to get a legit 3rd pillar to start offsetting losses that they and everyone else deals with in the market now. Imagine if the Sony was just the Playstation brand...the PS3 would have destroyed them. You HAVE to have something to fall back on if you wanna play ball in the console market these days.

Let's take the time to remember when Nintendo came out swinging at E3 04, at a time when the Gamecube was on the ropes:

Nothing but games and minimal bullshyt.

And by the end of the video, everyone in the crowd shed tears of joy (which they had to mute on the direct feed but the reaction video is out there).:wow:

Actually, the gaming business is one of Sony's most successful branches. Without it Sony as a whole would be even more :flabbynsick: than they are now.

I'd say Microsoft is the most likely to give up its gaming division but even that seems unlikely unless the Xbox One doesn't manage to recover from its slump (which it will eventually).
Right now sure. But they were selling ps3's at a 300 dollar loss per unit. They never wpuld have survived through that as any other company.
