NJ police have their sights on recapturing Assata Shakur
The New Jersey State Police are hopeful that President Barack Obama’s announcement to mend relations with Cuba will result in the capture of fugitive and former Black Panther Party member Assata Shakur.
In 1973, Shakur— whose birth name is Joanne Chesimard— and two others traveling with her were pulled over on a New Jersey turnpike. She was then shot twice after a gunfight erupted. Trooper Werner Foerster was killed during the incident, along with one of the men in the car with Shakur.
On March of 1977, Shakur was convicted as an accomplice to the murder of Foester under an aiding and abetting statute, and was sentenced to life in prison. The activist escaped prison in 1979. She has been living in exile in Cuba since 1984 after she was granted asylum by former Cuban president Fidel Castro.
In 2005, the FBI offered $1 million for Shakur’s capture. On May 2, 2013, the New Jersey Attorney General added an addition $1 million to the reward, and on the same day, the FBI put Shakur on its Most Wanted Terrorist list, making her the first woman ever added.
“We view any changes in relations with Cuba as an opportunity to bring her back to the United States to finish her sentence for the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper in 1973,” New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said of Shakur in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page Wednesday.
“We continue to work closely with the FBI towards the capture of Joanne Chesimard, a convicted felon and fugitive who escaped from jail in 1979 and remains on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, as well as New Jersey’s Most Wanted List,” Fuentes said. “We stand by the reward money and hope that the total of two million dollars will prompt fresh information in the light of the altered relationship.”
State Attorney General John Hoffman also expressed the seizing of Shakur to be a priority.
“With the president’s announcement today on easing relations with Cuba, we remain ever hopeful in our resolve to bring Joanne Chesimard to justice,” Hoffman said. “We will be working closely with federal authorities as we explore ways to apprehend her and return her to her rightful place in a New Jersey prison.”
