Speaking to SYFYWire after today's TCA Legion panel, writer/director Noah Hawley confirmed the 'magical' Doctor Doom solo script is a work in progress.

After the remarks Noah Hawley made to Collider at today's Legion panel regarding Doom in light of the Fox/Disney merger, SYFYWire's Tara Bennett asked Hawley about his upcoming projects, including writing the script for A Pale Blue Dot, a screenplay adaptation of Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, and most notably, the script for an origin story solo film for one of Marvel's most iconic villains, Doctor Doom, a project he initially revealed at SDCC's Legion panel in July of last year.

What Hawley had to say gives a more concrete idea of what stage the solo film is at currently, and definitively answers, that for now, it is moving ahead:

“I’m still writing [Doom] and it’s really fun and exciting. It’s its own movie. I feel like those [superhero] movies often work best when you marry genres. Captain America: Winter Soldier, I thought was a great marrying of a Cold War movie and a comic book movie. And this has its own alchemy of genre that I am really excited about. It won’t be surreal. I’m not trying to do that, but it’s going to tell me what it wants to be on some level. You have a character in Doctor Doom who uses magic, so the movie should be magical on some level. It’s all an exploration that I’m going through.”

What's most exciting to hear from these remarks is that Hawley confirms that Doom will be using magic in the film. It seems a given, but after two different takes on Doctor Doom firmly avoiding ascribing his power set to magic, it's a needed clarification and a breath of fresh air. He also states that it won't be surreal à la his take on the acclaimed series Legion.

While it's certainly gratifying to hear that there is definitive traction on Hawley's Doom solo, the fact that he has so much else on his plate is cause for concern: Hawley is reportedly in the middle of working on the aforementioned Cat's Cradle and A Pale Blue Dot scripts, in addition to being the showrunner of Legion, which began filming this September and is set to premiere its second season in April. Hawley is also still attached to FX's Fargo and a fourth season is expected to be released in 2019, according to FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. It's unsure when the script for his Doctor Doom film will be finished.

Another prominent roadblock is the finalization of the Disney/Fox merger, which according to several outlets, will be completed within 12 to 18 months. The fate of films in earlier stages, like Hawley's Doom, are left in question.

However, another film further along in development is Gore Verbinski's Gambit. With Channing Tatum attached to star, the film is scheduled to shoot this March, with a February 2019 release date. Keeping this in mind, before news of the merger, Fox had two other untitled Marvel films planned for 2019: June 7th and November 22nd. With Deadpool 2, Dark Phoenix, and New Mutants all being released in 2018, sequels to any of them look unlikely in such a short time (besides possibly Drew Goddard's X-Force). The road may be left wide open for one of these untitled films to be Noah Hawley's Doom solo film.

Disney can't do shyt until the merger is officially done which won't be until the end of this year or early next. For example

Right, but since they are still writing this Doom movie it's safe to say it won't release before the merger is complete. It would be a waste of money to do any actual shooting or casting on this.

Whenever Doom does hit the big screen again I hope that they make him a magical AND scientific threat. Part of what's made him such a powerful villain is that he's so versatile and just a step or 2 below the top tier hero in various categories. He's not quite as smart as Reed Richards, his armor is a little less powerful than Iron Man, and He's a sorcerer that's almost on par with Dr. Strange. Hell of a combination :wow:

At this point I just want Marvel to scrap any Foc Doom plans after the merger and start from square 1. Establish Doom in the MCU after you've established the God-Tier Villain that is Harry Osborne.

With that Fox purchase and the Sony deal, the MCU could easily transition into Secret Invasion and Dark Reign after Infinity War and if they did I bet that a lot of the actors who'd like to leave would stick around for a few more movies based off of the power of the story telling.

Let's all remember, the Magneto Nazi hunter segment in First Class(the best part), was cribbed from a Magneto: Origins script. Disney can let Fox do all the work then just absorb the script for future MCUFF.

Im pissed they scrapped the magneto origins and made it into another xmen reboot. A young magneto movie wouldve showed him as anti villain malcom x.

I need an age of apocalypse series fukking now!!

‘Legion’ Creator Dishes Details on His Mysterious ‘Doctor Doom’ Movie
537ba8e5a36c4.jpg

Noah Hawley has a lot on his plate right now. In just the last few years, television’s most unheralded hero has helped to reinvigorate the anthology format with FX’s brilliant Fargo, re-define the superhero genre with the psychedelic Legion, and he’s now prepping for his feature film directorial debut with Natalie Portman’s Pale Blue Dot.

If Netflix isn’t looking to poach Hawley like it did with Ryan Murphy, then the streamer is missing out on one of Hollywood’s most talented creators.

But among the many plates Hawley has spinning in the air at the moment, arguably the most intriguing—and mysterious—is a solo movie he’s penning and possibly directing about the iconic comic book character Doctor Victor Von Doom.

Fox has tried and failed to bring this fan-favorite to life with the hokey mid-2000s Fantastic Four series, where Doom was played by Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), and the ill-advised gritty 2015 reboot, which saw Toby Kebbell (Kong: Skull Island) take on the role. Neither meshed with general audiences or hard core comics fans.

But Hawley wants to attack the property from a new angle, multiple ones actually, with the idea of giving fans something they haven’t quite seen before.

“As with Legion, my thought was that the [superhero] genre has a certain kind of movie covered, but what else can the genre do,” Hawley told Observer. “What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the king of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?”

The creator/showrunner pointed to a recent successful example in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a starting point for his own story.

“It’s something that [Captain America] Winter Soldier did really well, which was kind of make a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of, and I don’t want to say too much about it, but it is a mixture of genres,” he explained. “The mandate is not to re-launch the Fantastic Four franchise as much as it is to take this fascinating and under-served character and really build a movie about him where we ask the question: Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What does he really want?”

“We’re able to explore these questions in a serious way,” Hawley added.

Superhero fans have been clamoring for a quality portrayal of Doctor Doom for the better part of a decade now, and Hawley’s unique storytelling talents—ambitious visuals and a symbiotic relationship between plot and character—make him the perfect mind to shepherd that version into existence.

But one potentially major roadblock stands in his way and it’s not the Fantastic Four.

With Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s major entertainment assets expected to be approved by mid-2019, no one is sure what will happen with the current X-Men universe, which takes place in a separate continuity from the MCU. Disney CEO Bob Iger has mentioned that the Deadpool franchise will be allowed to continue in all of its R-rated glory, but the rest of Fox’s superhero slate is a question mark.

As of now, Hawley knows just as much as we do.

“That’s not clear to me yet. I haven’t had any larger Marvel-based conversations about if they have plans for the X-Men universe or if they have plans for their other Fox-controlled comic properties. I would have to imagine there’s a plan in a drawer somewhere,” he said.

In regard to Legion, he noted: “But as long as the show is making noise and is watched by people, I won’t be worried that they’re going to cancel Legion because it doesn’t fit in with their larger brand. But, who knows, I haven’t had those conversations.”

Fingers crossed the Mouse House let’s Hawley do his thing.
