I'm going to use W. Europe as an example for differences in our society then and now because American culture uses the West European model with a few modifications.
In 19th century Western Europe women would often not allow themselves to be "side-chicks" of other men unless there was a major profit or they were a woman from a disgraceful class in the first place (or at least.. let it be known, if it was they would become social outcasts).
Women were pressured to be virginal and caste (especially higher-class women) until marriage.
Men of all social backgrounds were encouraged to find sexual partners (with cocottes and lower-class females) premaritally or outside of their own marriage.


What's the difference?? Women are making their clandestine affairs known to the public and they're willingly becoming "side-chicks" of men with little to offer,.
