We've all heard about the Chinese wet markets and the weird Chinese dietary habits. But what's never been addressed is, WHY.

Well the truth is... Ancient Chinese myths

That's right. The reason they eat so many weird things is because they have cultural myths surrounding the consumption of bizarre and exotic animals

They do it because they are ill-informed, and hold onto ancient and false cultural beliefs.

Pangolin scales were originally used in Chinese medicine mainly to promote lactation for women after delivering babies. [When] they don't have enough milk for the kids, then that can help. The other one is for the females’ menstruation, to stimulate the menstruation flow. Then also for other conditions, for example arthritic conditions – joint pain, particularly due to the wind, cold weather or dampness in the body.

Bonnie: Pangolin scales are unique because they are made up mostly of keratin – the same stuff our fingernails are made of. It’s a protective protein that can be used for a lot of ailments in Chinese medicine.

Marcy: But, has Chinese medicine been scientifically proven [to work]? Or is it really just a superstition?

Lao: Good question, but I can answer. I don't think it is a superstition. If you look at the original literature, the Asian literature, it has nothing to do with superstition. They really thought these [ingredients] could be used, and they practised their use in treating patients, so they found them useful and patients recovered. However, even though Chinese medicine has been used for many, many years, it still lacks something called “evidence based”. That means we don't have enough research. We don't have this kind of evidence to support this.

That and it’s impossible to feed 1.4 billion people and be able to keep labor costs down to $0.13 a days for their labor. That’s why the government isn’t stepping in.
Feeding a lot of people has nothing to do with the cultural myth that pangolin scales have magical properties. Ancient myth is at the bottom of Corona, not starving people. Pangolins are ridiculously expensive there.

Why wouldn't it have to do with that? Pangolins are only one example. Starving ppl are going to eat many things that aren't considered culturally appropriate to eat. I've heard past famimes in China, have made the populous more open to eating various animals.

They eat those weird things because they believe the animals will give them certain magic like benefits.

Did you see that thread about the people getting sick from eating centipedes? The only reason they ate them, was because they thought that eating them had good effects for their health.

Westerners don't really grasp how much some of the chinese diet is rooted in ancient myth

This is why I said it's a mix. They're taking anything and everything no matter how obscure or unsanitary and packing them on top of each other. Some bat sitting in a cage above a pangolin shyts in it's food and some weird virus is born. Couple this with deforestation and global warming with new animals making their way into the markets and it's a time bomb waiting to go off. They've been doing this for centuries without wiping out half of mankind, so why would it happen all of a sudden now? So yeah, outdated thinking is a big contributer, but there are other factors at play and I think a big reason the government isn't cracking down on it along with ingrained superstitious reasons is because they need a cheap way to feed their masses. I don't really know what's it's going to take for them to get their citizens to stop doing this shyt.

True especially the part about the wet market, kill right before you cook it thing.

But the reason they eat all that bullshyt is because they never was able to feed themselves. They multiply like rabbits. Read the most deadly battles in Human history and You got the Somme and Stalingrad but other than the world war I and II battles all the major battles were in China. It's also the place where they had the most deadly natural disasters too yet they still have 1.7 billion people. That's why they eat boiled leather they had famines several times, They got to eat what they can get.
