Last night me and my girls sipped some wine and was watching some old Katt Williams stand up and then watched kings of comedy(damn I miss Bernie mac)...

When Steve Harvey started playing Earth Wind and Fire and this Lenny Williams gem

We were all singing along except for my Haitian friend. She was like, “I don’t know this shyt. I didn’t grow up listening to it. I grew up listening to Haitian music” her mom played Haitian old school in her house.

Made me realize that there are probably many others like her that didn’t grow up listening to old school. She also said they didn’t grow up in her household talking about historic events in black
American history either.

For those of you on here that are African, Jamaican, Haitian, Dominican, etc, did y’all parents also not play ados old school?

*not to meant to be a divisive thread. I’m just genuinely curious.

Parents didnt even speak English when we got here in the 80s brehette... I found 60-70s funk/jazz/soul/rb all on my own

we did talk about rastafarianism, garvey, jamaica, ww2 black pilots, absynnian baptists, abolitionism, de-colonialization, org of african unity etc. though.

mostly because those topics were related to Ethiopia

and of course racism was ever present daily when we went outside, so that topic was there

I miss bernie as well :mjcry::mjcry::mjcry::mjcry:

It’s crazy. Watching that knowing he was dead.

I was legit :mjcry: Bernie was my fave.

We watched Katt Williams pimp chronicles too, it’s crazy what drugs will do to you. He was talking about Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston—they weren’t dead yet. :mjcry:

Side note—so many of the jokes were still relevant to what’s happening now. They were talking about white people shooting shyt up and racism—a lot of shyt hasn’t changed. But that’s another topic.

Haitians are more isolated than other west Indians

(They Into thier own thing)

But most west Indians (Jamaicans..Trinis...crucians..Bajan)

Know and listened to AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC ALOT

cause of the Soundsystems

For instance in Jamaica and other island soundsystems that I grew up with was playing old school STAX and MOTOWN songs

Such as STONE LOVE SOUND INTL. ... SOUL SUPREME.....GEMINI DISCO

TEC 9 outta the Virgin islands played alot of classic r&b and American rap

and even going back further to the 50s you had soundsystems like Tom the Sebastian (metromedia)...Duke Reid...Coxsone Sound playing Blues and R&b

So yes WE NON ADOS PEOPLE GREW UP ON CLASSIC SOUL....like EARTH WIND AND FIRE...TEDDY P......MAZE

We ARE BLACK TOO....WE HAVE RHYTHM

STOP THIS TRIBAL SHYT...YALL INTERNET NERDS ARE DELUSIONAL

THAT A.D.O.S SHYT AIN'T POPPING IN THESE STREETS

AS MAZE SAID ..WE ARE ONE

Most all our Television programs were American and lots of Caribbean folks, from back in the days of rotary dial tvs grew up watching american shyt from M*A*S*H down to little house on the prairie. My grandmother (God rest her soul) was an Elvis fan and outside of Bob Marley, Mah Dukes loves her some Percy Sledge and Kenny Rogers for Christmas.

Hell, I was practically an anomaly in the Caribbean growing up since I tempered my love of Wu Tang, Outkast back in Highschool with Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Lenny Kravitz before Reality shows engulfed music media stations, when most black kids were expected to stick to BET amongst the local calypso, Zouk and R&B that was prevalent down here.

But from young I was a music lover and if shyt sounded good, I fukked with it. I actually ordered the Creedence Clear Water Revival boxset off the telly back in the 90's and used to listen to James Brown, Coltrane and Prince records when I wore out all the Reggae records in my Uncle's record collection at the time.

Her folks were prolly strict with the sort of entertainment and information that passed in the house, especially if it wasn't Haitian related shyt. It happens, but I can't speak too much on it since I just viewed in passing and never lived in such households.
