In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and amid renewed nationwide calls for stronger gun control, some Lower Hudson Valley residents would like lawmakers to expand the amount of information the public can find out about gun owners. About 44,000 people in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam — one out of every 23 adults — are licensed to own a handgun.

Anyone can find out the names and addresses of handgun owners in any county with a simple Freedom of Information Law request, and the state’s top public records expert told The Journal News last week that he thinks the law does not bar the release of other details. But officials in county clerk’s offices in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam maintain the public does not have a right to see such things as the specific permits an individual has been issued, the types of handguns a person possesses or the number of guns he or she owns — whether one or a dozen.

It's public record so anyone could find out if they really wanted to except the paper did it.

fukk, mods working too fast.

Anyway....

this was a case of irresponsible journalism. Now these people are free to be harrassed by those who oppose the 2nd Amendment, or are left-wing gun abolitionists, and i'm liberal breh.

The people had nothing to do with the shootings or with any of the events of the past year, its a case of a small publication trying to do something drastic to gain readership.

you don't print the information of innocent, unrelated people. period.

Since everything is public nowadays I don't see whats wrong with this:yeshrug: I mean If you look up someones name on the internet it shows you where they live, where they use to live, how much they bought their house, voter registration etc etc. So this aint shyt

Plus its good for the gun owners too if you think about it:whew:

Newspapers suck to read and are annoying to navigate through. But that was a bytch move and pure political posturing it would have been more appropriate to list all the mental patients and pedos in the area...fukking fakkits

As a young black male I'm more threatened by gun owners than I am by "mental patients" and "pesos."

That's not the NEWSpapers responsibility though....they are supposed to report the NEWS.

Did any of these people shoot anyone in the past 2 weeks? Get in any gun battles? Be in the news for any other reason besides that they own guns?

No.

Therefore, none of these people are NEWSworthy and thus they are not relevant. If you are concerned that much about the gun ownership or the convicted sexual predators in your hood the databases are there fore you, but that's not the papers job to print people NAMES and ADDRESSES of totally regular people...like i said its irresponsible.

You would never see the New York Times or the Washington Post print out the names of gun owners like that. I'm usually all for press transparency and things of the sort but there is a line that should not be crossed.
