Police in New York said a town official was arrested over the weekend for shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who was lost and trying to find the right address.

State police said John Reilly, the highway superintendent for the Town of Chester, was arrested on Saturday, the day after allegedly shooting the delivery driver in front of his home. The 48-year-old faces charges of felony assault and weapons possession.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Friday night on Valerie Drive. According to police, the DoorDash driver had become lost and could not locate the correct delivery address.

The DoorDash worker went door-to-door, asking for directions in hopes of tracking down the correct home, police said. He eventually made it to Reilly's home, where the 48-year-old instructed the man to get off his property.

After turning to leave, police allege that Reilly fired "multiple shots" at the delivery man. One of the bullets struck him in the back, "causing seriously physical injuries."

DoorDash shared a statement with The New York Times, saying the company would work with law enforcement following this "tragic incident."

“We’re devastated by this senseless act of violence, and we’re wishing the Dasher a full and speedy recovery,” the statement read.


Reilly is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning in the Town of Chester Court. Contact information for his attorney was not immediately known.

According to police, Reilly is a federally licensed firearms dealer.

Smh…. Insane!! The poor guy speaks broken English, he said he needed help and that his phone was broken, then THANKS the owner of the help and calmly slowly walks away and gets shot in the back?! 🙏🏼 God I hope he makes it without any lasting damage!

The highway superintendent in Chester, N.Y., was charged Saturday with shooting a DoorDash delivery driver in the back, police said.

John Reilly, 48, was arrested Saturday at his home in the small Orange County town, New York State Police said in a press release. He was charged with first-degree assault and two weapons crimes.

A food delivery driver working for DoorDash got lost on Reilly’s street on Friday night and started going door to door asking for directions, according to investigators. When the driver knocked on Reilly’s door, Reilly told the driver to get off his property, police said.

As the driver left, Reilly pulled a gun and fired multiple bullets at the victim, striking the driver once in the back, state police said. The driver suffered “serious physical injuries” but was expected to survive.

Cops picked up Reilly on Saturday, and he was arraigned and sent to Orange County jail in lieu of $250,000 cash bond.

Reilly, a Republican, was first appointed to the highway superintendent position in March 2021, then elected later that year and reelected in 2023. Chester Town Supervisor Brandon Holdridge told the Albany Times-Union that village leadership was monitoring the situation.

“We are deeply troubled by what has been reported so far,” Holdridge told the paper. “We hope the person who was injured in the incident makes a full and healthy recovery.”

Call the customer if they don't answer in 10 minutes and you select the option for order not deliverable or customer unreachable

The hell are you waking people up in the middle of the night, looking all sketchy and nervous in their doorbell camera
