*full press conference

May 9, 2023
NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor David C. Banks today launched “New York City Reads,” a major citywide campaign to declare literacy and reading instruction as the core focus and overriding priority of New York City’s public schools. This multi-pronged, long-range campaign renews the commitment of public schools to the primary responsibility of ensuring the city’s students become confident readers and are able to learn basic algebra. With half of New York City students not proficient at reading, and more than two-thirds nationally, Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks today declared that now is the time for the city and nation to act.

“It’s not your fault. It’s not your child’s fault. It was our fault,” Mr. Banks said. “This is the
beginning of a massive turnaround.”

Hmm... Don't know about this statement, but glad to see a return to phonics.

That sound byte was for the cameras. Hope he is Chancellor long enough to see measurable results from this shift.

So he can either take credit or own up to "it's our fault".

I don't know enough about Elementary education to comment on the details of the plan, but under 50% proficiency rate is alarming.

Next family gathering, gonna ask the educators what they think about this new approach.

Agreed, but the folks (or folk) at home aren't always capable or willing.

That leaves the school system on the front end and the justice system on the back end, neither of which are capable.

At one point, it might have been possible to involve the Black Church, but as an institution, the church has been dying.

Churches definitely gotta step up as well. 100% agree

And there are many churches that are out rather doing the right things.

I can't imagine people live like this. To The best of my memory, I could already read before school due to my parents. You'd be crazy behind if you relied on school. I'd also worry about delaying the progression of competent students by holding the class back to study basic phonics.

Schools were more so for increasing the vocabulary and learning funky words like "ambidextrous" or "pterodactyl". But most of the language and grammar was picked up before school.

It's crazy that Til this day, I still remember arguing with my 1st grade teacher that "sword" was a stupid word with an unnecessary letter. And I still stand by that statement today. :pachaha:

You'd be surprised how many teachers who are parents themselves have dumb unprepared kids.

Meanwhile, I know 2nd generation IT people.

How does SysAdmin run in the blood, but Hooked On Phonics don't?

mainstram media only delves into surface level aspects of the nation's educational situation

the pedagogical schools THEMSELVES are failing. the actual schools that teachers go go get certified are themselves low performing.

It should not be taken for granted that the teacher in front of your child is even certified to teach the subject as thats often not the case. Then lets not get into the distribution of competent and simply credentialed teachers.

African Americans had developed a successful pedagogical heritage that was so effective it developed people that challenged the nation to the point of destabilizing it.

So called integration eviservated this centuries old culture we had developed. This is a loss that is not accounted for in popular discussions of the present or the past

An important text on this is Jim Crows Pink Slip. We went from having EMPIRICALLY the most educated teaching and school admin force in America to having our children in front of hordes disinterested mediocre white women .... and it's called progress

Jim Crows Pink Slip by Leslie Fenwick

Integrated by Noliwe Rooks is a great addition

Fugitive Pedagogy by Jarvis R. Givens is another important one.

We really dont know what we lost
