New York City FC’s haters have trolled them as a vagabond without a home, stuck playing in somebody else’s baseball stadium. But for NYCFC’s players, hailing from everywhere from Spain to Norway to New York, Sunday’s home opener in iconic Yankee Stadium is a moment they will remember — and savor — forever.
“It’s going to be one of those moments you have to look around and say, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I need to enjoy that,” coach Jason Kreis said. “Having said that, if you can [appreciate it] for three-to-five seconds, then realize you’re here for a job, that we can all really enjoy if we can walk away with three points in our pocket.”
Led by David Villa and Mix Diskerud, NYCFC got their first point in last Sunday’s inaugural game before a crowd of 62,000 at fellow expansion debutante Orlando City SC. Now they’re looking for their first ever win with roughly 40,000 expected for the home opener against New England (5 p.m., ESPN2).
