In terms of GDP, New York City's economy is larger than Russia's economy. According to the IMF's data for 2020, Russia had a GDP of $1.48 trillion, while New York City had a GDP of $1.5 trillion. And if you throw in the rest of the State...

America’s third largest state economy – New York with a GDP in 2018 of $1.68 trillion – produced slightly more economic output last year than Russia ($1.63 trillion). As a separate country, New York would have ranked as the world’s 11th largest economy last year, ahead of No. 12 Russia ($1.63 trillion)

To put this into perspective, if NYC were a country, its GDP would be comparable to that of Canada or South Korea, both of which are ranked among the world's top 15 economies. In fact, if NYC were an independent country, it would have the 11th largest economy in the world, based on nominal GDP.
