An NYPD lieutenant an off-duty sergeant were stripped of their guns and shields after they were allegedly caught having drunken sex in the bathroom of an office used by the department, the Daily News has learned.

Lt. Brandi Sanchez, 38, and Sgt. Lambros Gavalas, 46, were both placed on modified assignment after they were caught by two other cops inside the 12th floor bathroom of a federal building at 90 Church Street, a section of which is utilized by cops working for the NYPD’s Family Assistance Section, sources said.

Sanchez works for the Family Assistance Section, which provides comfort and care to families of police officers who die in the line of duty, officers suffering from debilitating illnesses and 9/11-related illnesses, as well as cops who have family members suffering from debilitating illnesses, officials said. Members offer services and help schedule doctor appointments.

Gavalas is assigned to the department’s Grand Larceny section and was on duty at the time of the incident, sources with knowledge of the case said. Sanchez was also on duty, but was about five minutes away from ending her tour.

Sanchez, who was drunk and belligerent when asked about her bathroom stall romp, was departmentally charged with being unfit for duty. Gavales, sources said, was given a rip for misuse of department time.

Two other cops allegedly caught Sanchez who lives with an NYPD deputy inspector, which she has a child in common with inside the bathroom stall performing a sex act with Gavalas, at about 6:40 p.m. Friday.

Gavales left Sanchez in the stall, who was so intoxicated that she couldn’t immediately answer any questions, sources said.

While in the stall, Sanchez wasn’t in uniform or armed, but in a burgundy dress, black coat and black shoes, sources said. The Family Assistance Unit is a plain-clothes unit, so cops aren’t required to wear uniforms, officials said.

Sanchez was put on modified assignment after a brief interview with the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau. Gavales was modified and put on desk duty after he was located, sources said.

“The officer’s duty status is modified and the matter is under internal review,” an NYPD spokesman said Tuesday.

The salacious discovery was made after an NYPD sergeant also assigned to Family Assistance Section entered the bathroom and found two people in a closed stall apparently having sex.

The sergeant ran out to grab a lieutenant, who ordered the two out of the bathroom, but the couple kept going, according to sources.

After a second warning, Gavales left the stall and the bathroom without saying a word to the two cops. Sanchez remained inside and was uncooperative when asked what had happened.

Sanchez joined the department in 2004. She lives with Deputy Inspector Timothy Skretch, the current commanding officer of the 79th Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The two have a child in common, sources said.

Gavales joined the department in 1996. The two had met when Sanchez was assigned to the NYPD Grand Larceny Division.
