O.J. Simpson’s lawyer has reversed his stance on trying to prevent a payout of a $33.5 million judgment to the families of the former NFL player’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.
Attorney Malcolm LaVergne originally admitted he hoped that Goldman’s family would receive “ zero, nothing” for the massive judgment that was awarded to both his and Nicole Brown’s families in a wrongful death lawsuit. LaVergne claimed that he would “do everything in my capacity as the executor or personal representative to try and ensure that they get nothing.”
LaVergne’s attitude has since changed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The publication alleges it spoke with the lawyer, who seems to now support Goldman’s claim. “I can tell you in advance, Fred Goldman’s claim will be accepted,” said LaVergne about Ron’s father. “And his claim will be handled in accordance with Nevada law.”
The lawyer then revealed that his earlier comments about wanting Goldman’s family not to receive anything were in response to his attorneys.
“Within an hour of knowing that O.J. died, he started talking sh!t,” explained LaVergne. “My advocate instinct was, ‘Oh, you’re gonna keep shytting on him even after he’s dead?’” he said. “'Fine, you know? You get nothing.' And so, those were my remarks then. But I backtracked, and they were pretty harsh remarks. And now I’m going in the other direction.”
LaVergne revealed his plans to be “hypertransparent” with Brown and Goldman’s families. “I’m going to show my homework before I even have to give it to the courts and see what we can do in terms of getting this estate in order,” he said.
In 2022, Fred revealed that his family had yet to receive any money from Simpson as a result of the 1997 civil trial verdict. “It’s a ridiculous number, none of which has ever appeared,” said Fred. “[Simpson] never paid one single penny. Anything that we were able to take was through our own efforts of taking things away from him.
