I left at 16 years and needed 20 for pension. They say SEALs are 1 inch shorter when they leave because of the boats ramming on tops of their heads and compressing their spinal discs. I do think those guys shouldn't get their pensions treated as regular Navy gys. Especially DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6). Those guys have to spend several deployments on regular teams, then train for DEVGRU, then maybe get a few deployments with them until they get killed or severely injured.
That's beside the point. What I think the shooter honestly did was he saw Mark Owen's success, and I think he quit the Navy hoping for a book deal, movie deal, or some kind of consulting gig. I think Mark Owen and the publishing company got the lawsuits, all the trouble from the Pentagon, and I think publishers didn't want to touch him, and now his money making potential is way lower, due to timing.
Ultimately he just tried to catch the wave and timed it wrong.
EDIT: If you don't know who mark Owen is, it's the pen name of the SEAL standing behind the shooter, the 2nd guy that went through the door. He also shot Osama, after Osama was on the floor, and wrote the book No Easy Day, detailing the raid. He has 2 interviews on 60 minutes. One in 2012, and one from the other week, that can be seen here:
