The more appropriate example would be putting a bugatti body kit on a honda even though he could afford the car outright. If you are not trying to impress anyone, why not just drive the Honda? And for the jewellery, if you are going to wear fake ones because you are not trying to "impress" anyone, then do not wear jewellery at all. If he said he wore it only because he liked it and did not want to spend the money for it, than that is one thing, but that is not what he said.
