In late August of 2018, the Giants signed receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a contract extension. Within weeks, things got weird. Within months, the Giants traded Beckham to the Browns.

On Saturday, Beckham said he didn’t want to go.

I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants,” Beckham said during the CBS coverage of the UEFA Champions League final, via Fox News.com. “The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over.”

He nevertheless said plenty about what was going on, as it was going on. In a surreal early October interview with Josina Anderson, then of ESPN, with Lil Wayne sitting alongside Beckham, the one-time dominant receiver was asked whether the Giants had an issue at quarterback, under Eli Manning.

“Uh, I don’t know,” Beckham said.

Asked at the time whether he’s happy in New York, Beckham said, “That’s a tough question.”

Even after Beckham was traded, he spoke openly about his unhappiness in New York.

I can’t do this anymore,” Beckham told GQregarding his mindset during his last year in New York. “I just can’t do it. I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t in a good place. And like I told you earlier, I feel like everything is about happiness, and I just was not.”

He wasn’t happy. But he never, ever wanted to leave?

The reality is that he had it worse with the Browns, who eventually released him after the 2021 trade deadline. Beckhamthen landed with the Rams, where he played with a torn ACL until his knee gave out during Super Bowl LVI.

He then missed all of 2022, spent 2023 with the Ravens, and had a disappointing 2024 with the Dolphins, who cut him late in the year. He had no takers and still has been linked to no NFL team.

By all appearances, the 32-year-old Beckham likely won’t return to the NFL. All in all, his career was a success. He owns a Super Bowl ring. He had five 1,000-yard seasons.

But with 579 catches and 7,987 career receiving yards, a career that once seemed destined for Canton will likely be remembered primarily for one very memorable one-handed catch in 2014 and otherwise unfulfilled potential.

I don’t know dudes background but the players seem so emotional. Strong masculine guidance would help you understand, winning is a process. 32 billion dollar teams have the same goal. Keep your head down, do you part, and maybe the team will succeed.

If the team doesn’t succeed, you did your best.
You are a small cog in a massive organization. This isn’t basketball.

Imagine being the most popular football player in the league and throw it all away because you are “unhappy” about not winning every game. You are a king in NYC but you want to throw hissy fits.

He was unhappy because the Giants started getting unhappy with his attitude and couldn't run around unchecked anymore. And he never wanted to leave because he was in a big market, by the time he got to LA he was a 3rd or 4th option. He wasn't dying his hair and getting hairstyles to go play in Cleveland

It definitely feels like he left a lot of a career on the table. Like somebody turning in incomplete homework or something. Article says his career was a success, numbers are solid for the injuries and of course all the money, but idk about a success. He had HOF written on him in bold at one point

In retrospect Eli was the best QB he played with until Stafford and the one he put up his best stats with. I believe he's just reflecting on what he knows should have been a sure fire Hall of Fame career. A career even 10 years goes by fast and these young cats think they have FOREVER to leave their mark on the game. His career should be a cautionary tale of it's not how you start but how you finish that will take you longer.

Injuries derailed him more than anything. His broken ankle took away that top speed he had and was noticeably slower his last season on the giants. Then add in the two ACL injuries after that

That. And he wasn't anticipating other wrs coming into the league that showed to be as good or better than him.

Giants were sliding into the cellar dwellers they are now and he was upset about it, but also ownership 100% punished him for his attitude when sending him to Cleveland. They wanted to humble him and they did. With hindsight, I'm sure he would have taken losing seasons in NY over Cleveland :francis: He was trying to talk his way into a title contender and greater stardom but had zero leverage or people on his side.

Don't you think that the Giants are professional and took the best deal they could get for him?

When we talking picks, wouldn't they rather want say Clevelands picks than KC's? :jbhmm:

The organization that drafted a QB because he looked like Eli? :dead: They made an example out of him.

They got a 17th, the 95th, and Jabril Peppers for him btw. And they already knew what the picks were because it was after the season. This was no king's ransom :hubie:

They already knew?

Well then I guess they mainly wanted to off-load the contract, but did any good team really want to pick up a very injury prone WR with that salary + give away a first rounder? :jbhmm:

Odell been saying that he could go to all the top teams but it sounds like cap to me
