No. KD is done physically. He’s slightly less of a defensive liability.

Durant is a big upgrade over Towns defensively.

Mfs can’t score on KD on-ball he’s been a top percentile isolation defender for quite some time.

He’s a big upgrade over Towns and would be fine here with Anunoby, Bridges, and Robinson around him.

I wouldn't do it because of the emotional aspect, trading a native new yorker after you reach the conference finals for the first time in decades is tough to sell

but the on court product would be better:

• KD is still a better offensive player than Towns with a skillset that is more resilient in the playoffs, especially as a secondary option.
• KD adds size, allows OG to play the 3, and a rim-protecting center to be on the floor at all times. Basically boosting both the offense and defense.
• Brunson and Towns is flat out untenable defensively.

You can't roll with that starting 5 next season anyways and Towns is going to be a bad contract pretty soon. And like you said, trading for KD gives you a big expiring in an offseason where there are some big fish free agents.

KD is a big gamble though so I get the apprehension but the fit is nice.

The way the cap space works, it’s not helping the Knicks to let that salary cap hold expire. It makes more sense to break it up in pieces that can be traded for a star in their prime like how we combined Randle and DDV form KAT.

Also we have the same issue we have now with the Knicks trying to run maybe 6-7 guys versus 10 guys. You gonna have Thibs playing KD heavy minutes in the regular season and then play heavy minutes in the playoffs.

I could be wrong but you won’t be able to retool much. It’s not like him expiring opens cap space that we can use to sign free agents. It probably just brings us below the first apron.

There’s benefits to it.

Durant is the better player, is a certified playoff riser, and there is less of a financial commitment tied to him.

Towns is turning 30 and is already a slow, lumbering defensive liability it’s only going to get worse and he is an injury prone player himself who thankfully avoided injury this past season.

There was already talks at the trade deadline between the Knicks, Durant, and the Suns so it’s a real possibility if we flame out.
