VH1 vouches for Nas

BEST RAP SONG

"Choosing between Nas‘s “Daughters,” Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s “N***** In Paris” and G.O.O.D. Music’s “Mercy” just isn’t fair, but somebody’s got to do it. Also nominated are Wale ft. Miguel‘s “Lotus Flower Bomb” (a huge record in its own right) and Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg ft. Bruno Mars‘s “Young, Wild & Free” (a song that barely made any waves). “Mercy” was the summer’s anthem and we’re sure even grandmas across America know the refrain “Lamborghini, mercy.” Meanwhile, “N***as in Paris” was a global phenom that had concertgoers everywhere going bonkers for up to 11 performances of the song in one show. But the storytelling of “Daughters,” a song any man raising a baby girl could relate to, had the hardest of grown men rapping and nodding their heads.—Bene Viera

3 of 5 complex editors go with Nas for Best Rap Song

Best Rap Song

Wale f/ Miguel "Lotus Flower Bomb"
Album: Ambition

G.O.O.D. Music "Mercy"
Album: Cruel Summer

Drake f/ Lil Wayne "The Motto"

Jay-Z & Kanye West "Ni**as In Paris"

Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg f/ Bruno Mars "Young, Wild & Free"

Predictions:
Lauren: I want Nas to win so that he can bring his daughter and Kelis on stage—would that even happen? What if Kelis was wearing the green dress? If this is a possibility, he has to win. But seriously, he needs a Grammy by now.

Ernest: Seriously, Nas doesn’t have a Grammy. “Paris” is obviously the favorite to win, but I’m hoping voters are moved by Nasir’s parental narrative enough to just give him a fukking statue.

David: “The Motto” I guess. Although Nas probably deserves a Grammy, and if he’s gonna get an unofficial lifetime achievement Grammy it’ll be for this one.

Insanul: So I ball so hard that I boycotted the Grammys, but then I won some awards and I started going to the Grammys, and then I’m gonna win a Grammy. What’s a throne without gold?

Foster: First of all, why has the world given Wale yet another thing to feed into his persecution complex? Next: Ty Dolla $ign helped write that Wiz and Snoop song; part of me wants it to win just so Ty can shine, but I just listened to it for the first time, and that shyt is stupid-corny. It’s gonna split votes with Nas. This award usually goes to indisputable rap anthems. Jay and ‘Ye have this.
