They havent really shown how intelligent they are but I got the impression that they sent her back under their control to infiltrate the resistance to them from within. She couldnt recall the gear she was wearing to get back to her parents and gave little to no detail on how she found them. Maybe her illness (im assuming she has some kind of mental disorder that they implied) affects the mind control or she's lying. The Lucas character basically went missing and then came back seemingly normal with the plan for them to go to that center of the city where the hub was which they realize ends is a trap. He then kills himself before he says much other than everything going as planned. He basically got those soldiers who came on the train under the aliens' control and depleted the strength of the human military camp. She could be being used just like he was.
