Boston makes me feel good.

Ernie Hudson has joined the cast of the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. The Ghostbusters star is the third actor to officially board the project, after Donnie Wahlberg, who is reprising his Blue Bloods role as Det. Danny Reagan, and Sonequa Martin-Green, who will play Danny's new partner.

According to Deadline Hollywood, which first reported the news, Hudson will portray Reverend Peters, a Baptist pastor at the head of a prominent Boston law enforcement dynasty that includes his daughter, District Attorney Mae Silver, and his granddaughter, Det. Lena Silver (Martin-Green).

The family's extensive law enforcement background echoes the Reagans on Blue Bloods, which makes Hudson the Boston Blue equivalent of Len Cariou's Henry Reagan, the retired NYPD commissioner who also has relatives on the police force and in the D.A.'s office.

Hudson is best known for playing paranormal exterminator Winston Zeddemore in 1984's Ghostbusters, its 1989 sequel, 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and 2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. He also portrayed a different character, Uncle Bill Jenkins, in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.

In recent years, Hudson has played a number of supporting and recurring roles on other crime shows, including The Family Business, City on a Hill, and L.A.'s Finest (where he worked with Boston Blue showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis). His other recent TV credits include Grace and Frankie, Quantum Leap, Twin Peaks: The Return, and MacGyver.

Hudson appeared in a 2018 episode of Blue Bloods as well, as Principal Darryl Ward.

Martin-Green's casting was announced last week at CBS' press conference announcing its 2025-2026 lineup. Responding to the news on Instagram, the actress wrote, "And then the page turned and I said, 'Wow Lord for real?!'" She added, "Honored to step into another beloved television legacy and make something new. Really excited for what God will do through this. Alright @donniewahlberg let’s go my friend!"

Martin-Green previously led Star Trek: Discovery and played a key supporting role on The Walking Dead. She has also appeared in multiple episodes of Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, and New Girl, as well as in films like Space Jam: A New Leg

Before Boston Blue was officially announced, Wahlberg teased a Danny Reagan spinoff while pitching an alternate ending for his Blue Bloods character in an interview with EW.

"I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast," he said. "But I want him to not be too far from the family so that he could still see them and spend time with them, but maybe to see what life has in store for him now that his boys have gone off and he's empty-nesting and his wife's gone. Maybe he can see what the future holds for him on his own. As long as he can visit the family sometimes."

He added, "Does that sound like a tease for a spinoff?"

Boston Blue will air this fall on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS — the same time slot in which Blue Bloods ended its 14-season run last year.
