Harry Belafonte Condemns Jay-Z And Beyonce (DETAILS) | Global Grind

this aint ya average internet hater liven in his mama basement, this is a real civil rights legend/pioneer and carries weight and gravitas.

THR: Back to the occasion of the award for your acting career. Are you happy with the image of members of minorities in Hollywood today?

Belafonte: Not at all. They have not told the history of our people, nothing of who we are. We are still looking. We are not determinated. We are not driven by some technology that says you can kill Afghans, the Iraqis or the Spanish. It is all -- excuse my French -- shyt. It is sad. And I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen, and now you’re talking. I really think he is black.

Harry Belafonte should be happy that rap and entertainment has provided an outlet for former drug dealers to better themselves. Jay isn't an elected official. He's not a civil rights leader or a role model. He doesnt owe anybody anything. He's not in and out of jail or raising a bunch of kids with different moms. He is however married to a Black woman and raising a family.

Its not the 60's anymore. The biggest thing we as individuals can do to improve our current conditions is to be accountable for ourselves and take care of our own families. Be our own role models.

Honestly I think he's right. Most of these artists dont realize the power and influence they have over their audience. People like Belafonte, Paul Robeson, Bill Russell, etc acknowledged the power and responsibility their position gave them and made moves to uplift their race. They put their careers and livelihood at risk becuase they were unhappy with the social conditions of their people. That's integrity - to have gone beyond the scope of being just an athlete, actor, or singer. He and many others have sacrificed and paved a lane for black entertainers today to eat but they dont feel an obligation to use their platform speak for others who dont have a voice. So coming from him I can see why he's disappointed.
