The World Boxing Council had threatened to strip heavyweight champion Riddikk Bowe of its title Jan. 2 if he didn't make his first defense against Britain's Lennox Lewis. Bowe beat the WBC to the punch yesterday; he tossed the WBC belt into a trash can in London, Lewis's hometown.

Bowe remains recognized by the other two main sanctioning bodies -- the World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Federation.

At a news conference, the Associated Press reported that Bowe picked up the belt and dropped it into a large black garbage can. "The WBC is wrong, and I will not be intimidated by them," he said. "I am the heavyweight champion of the world and today I withdraw my recognition of the WBC. I am stripping them. ... If Lewis wants the belt, he has to get it out of the garbage. Then we will call him 'garbage picker.' "
Was he viewed as a coward or ducking Lennox? Was he justified in being upset at the mandatory? What was the perception?

People were really disappointed. Everyone was expecting the Lewis-Ruddock and Bowe-Holyfield 1 winners to face each other and then it didn’t happen. Bowe got a lot of criticism for that.

It was probably because of the huge Time Warner contract Bowe got. Bowe got huge money for facing soft competition. I think they eventually would have fought after milking it, but Bowe lost to a supposedly shot Holyfield, and Lewis lost to McCall

Good info. As a kid my first favorite boxer other than Tyson, was Holyfield, because of the SEGA game. His fights aged like wine too, every Holyfield fight is entertaining on rewatch. Tyson/Holyfield 1 is fukkin epic.

Would've been great if that happened (the winners vs each other).

It was bad for him in NY for a while...

He was pretty much excommunicated in BK and became synonymous with bytch ass nikka...
I remember this being the same reaction and I was in high school living in Los Angeles at the time. He was a bytch ass nikka for ducking that fight.

I remember the Sega game, I would spend the whole round doing a combo of a hook to the body and uppercut to the head.

Holyfield had a lot of good fights. Qawi 1 is maybe the best cruiserweight fight ever. The Bowe fights, Moorer 2, Foreman, Mercer, Stewart 1, etc….The Dokes fight and Bowe 1 are probably my favorites. The 3rd round of the Cooper fight is a classic round too.

Holyfield has a solid argument for having tge most classic heavyweight fights ever...really any weight class. He never had a mid fight from what I remember.

because he kind of crashed and burned in his prime
I remember watching the Golota fight and it seemed like he got old overnight, I think it was due to him ballooning up to over 300lbs between fights. He also had a full kitchen built in his bedroom...he said he didnt feel like walking to the kitchen.
