President-elect Donald Trump touted his Electoral College victory Monday as a "historic electoral landslide" and a next step toward a brighter future.
"I thank the American people for their overwhelming vote to elect me as their next President of the United States," Trump said in a statement.
"The official votes cast by the Electoral College exceeded the 270 required to secure the presidency by a very large margin, far greater than ever anticipated by the media."
Though Trump bragged of historic margins, he trails Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by 2.8 million votes in the popular vote tally and The New York Times notes there have been 45 presidential elections in which the winning candidate won a larger share of the Electoral College vote.
Trump also tweeted about his victory on Monday night, again taking a dig at the media.
Electoral college members across the nation Monday gave Trump 304 total electoral votes.
The Republican-controlled Congress will certify the vote on Jan. 6.
"This election represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible," he added.
"With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans. Together, we will make America great again.”

Fam, let this be a lesson about how hard White liberals will go if theyre truly invested in stopping something. Even though they failed, the coordinated pressure campaign was fierce and unrelenting and some of those electors probably wouldve cracked if more than a few months had elapsed.
