Amongst the hectic shuffle that was PAX 2012, I got a chance to speak to Gears of War: Judgment multiplayer designer Quinn DelHoyo from Epic Games about some of the exciting new changes making their way into the Gears franchise with this latest installment.

On the PAX floor, the Gears team had set up the recently revealed Free-for-All game mode, a first for the Gears franchise. After getting some hands-on time with it and having an absolute blast on two gorgeous FFA maps, Gondola and Library, I had to ask, why only introduce FFA, a staple FPS game mode, to the Gears franchise now?

“Classically, Gears has always been a team-based game and we always liked that aspect of it – that it was heavily reliant on teamplay,” answered DelHoyo. “You kind of get tied to doing certain things when your dealing with a trilogy, like certain ideals and you want to stay true to that. But, when Gears 3 was over and we wanted to do something new with Gears Judgment, we were like, hey, let’s pop the hood off this baby and let’s really dig down deep and look at what can we do to make it cooler – what can we do to provide something that the fans would want.

“So Free-for-All is something that fans have always asked for and with Judgment being a totally different game, we said alright, let’s do it. Let’s make some maps that can work for free-for-all, let’s allow people to not have to worry about finding teams to go up against and they just go in all by themselves and shoot fools.”

Feel free to check out some Gears of War: Judgment FFA footage right here on the two same maps that were shown off at PAX.

ringing with it a completely different feel to the Gears franchise, it was clear that a game mode like FFA demanded certain tweaks to the gameplay in order to for it to keep up with the fast-paced action. I asked DelHoyo what were some of the biggest challenges in working with a brand new, and very different game mode like FFA.

“When [Gears Judgment] was coming along, Free-for-All was something we weren’t used to and the old control scheme, for an example, where you had to use the d-pad to switch [weapons], it was just slow, it was clunky and mistake prone. Our game is fast, this game is fast and we wanted a control scheme that was just as fast and as mean. That’s where we just slimmed it down to two weapons, put it on the ‘Y’ button and you can quickly cycle between them really fast. And then, what about grenades? Well, why not just have off-hand grenades? Put that on the left bumper, let people throw those quickly and get into engagements and battles quicker. Those were definitely the biggest tweaks in the game – the control scheme.”

The modernization of the Gears control scheme definitely lends to a more accessible experience, but ”that wasn’t necessarily the design intention,” explains DelHoyo. “It was just basically to improve gameplay and allow people to move and shoot at the same time. It does definitely help to have the reticle on-screen at all times. That’s one of the big changes – to allow people to move and shoot accurately. And the control scheme is very much what you’d find with other shooters – you know, ‘Y’ button switches between [weapons], on a console, you have two weapons. Off-hand grenades is very common. So that definitely helps for accessibility.”

So far, this marks two brand new game modes making their way to the Gears franchise if you include the previously announced Overrun mode. I asked if we could expect any additional game mode announcements in the future. While he couldn’t get into specifics, DelHoyo assured me that we “absolutely” can look forward to some extra goodies.

Quickly touching on the ranking system, DelHoyo mentioned, “were looking at everything, we’re opening up the hood, no stone will be un-turned, but that’s something we’re not going to be revealing or talking about right now.”

You can get your hands on Gears of War: Judgment this March 19, 2013 on the Xbox 360.

Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for the latest of everything Gears!

March 2013??

Thats not even a two year development cycle between gears 3. Idk I hope this isn't some rushed out game.
Also them saying the dpad being slow to switch weapons seem ridiculous, they probably sped up the animation also.

I have a feeling they will codify this one for the casuals.

newer games in a series are worked on before the previous title is released. Halo 4 is coming out 2 years after Halo: Reach and it had been in development for 4 years now.

The change in controls us big. The game will be better because of it. Like they said, it was slower before and sometimes you could make mistakes. Making it so the Y button swap ya weapons is a smart move. For one, damn near every game out now uses Y to swap weapons so it will become user friendly to those who haven't played gears before and it will make switching weapons easier while engaging opponents. also, keeping the reticle on the screen is big, it will help with aiming. I did what they did with grenades too, making it so you don't have to put away your guns to use them. This will definitely speed up the gameplay as well.

They are also going to have a ranking system, finally. fukk that exp garbage and make a ranking system that matches players based on their ranks #'s in matchmaking. They can still keep the exp system to feed the casuals that need to feel special for doing things during a match, but the game will live longer with a system where you get rewarded for winning or get punished for losing.

Faster animations for weapon switching are a good thing, I don't see how you may think otherwise. If they get Gears to play fast paced while being skillful that would be fukkin great from a competitive standpoint.

Gears is going to feel fresh again after the previous Trilogy. That's a good thing for the series, innovation that doesn't ruin the product is always welcomed.

Well with Halo 4 I could understand since it's being developed by 343 and whatnot. This on the other hand is being developed by Epic right?? I mean it feels like they literally threw everything out the door for Gears 3 in the first few months(DLC) to finish working on this based on how soon this comes out.

I don't think so Gears 3 was already fast paced imo and making it even faster with quick throw grenades and quick weapon switching will make a game already fast very fast. That and I noticed no stopping power when dude was getting shot with the lancer. That FFA mode had no downing which I assume is only for that mode.

Wait they're still going to have numbered ranking right or you just mean matchmaking will simply match players up with those with the same skill level?

Hmm I mean more Gears ain't bad but this feels waay too soon. I still play Gears 3 and am fine with it atm.

I feel you fam. It does seem a bit quick for a new installment. If I remember correctly it was a specific team at Epic that was working on this game in order to spread around resources between this and gears 3.

I'm not sure exactly what the ranking system will be, i'm just assuming since they brought it up they couldnt possibly be talking about the exp system they had since gears 2.

imma add u so we can run some gears from time to time. I only have a few cats on my list that play it and I refuse to run it by myself.

It's not even the same development team :wtf: you talking about people can fly is mostly directing this game. it is too fast for another installment i agree, but the GOW team is working on the next generation console already.

I think what they're doing is testing the waters with new mechanics and features in this Gears spinoff and then see what the fans reaction are like. If it's positive then if they ever reboot the series(most likely) they'll just keep the settings the same.
