COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After winning the first 12-team College Football Playoff and a national title as an at-large selection in 2024, Ohio State coach Ryan Day would like to see future models include at least four automatic qualifying spots for the expanded Big Ten.

As college football leaders discuss the next version of the CFP, beginning with the 2026 season, there has been recent pushback against templates that include more automatic spots for the Big Ten and the SEC.

At last week's SEC spring meetings, support grew for a model that included automatic entries for the top five conference champions and 11 at-large spots in a playoff that would expand from 12 to 16 teams next year. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and league administrators last week also voiced support for the 5+11 CFP model.

The Big Ten has not publicly advocated for a specific playoff model, but it has discussed one that would automatically include four teams for the Big Ten and for the SEC, two each for the Big 12 and ACC, and one for the top Group of 5 champion. The Big 12 and the ACC opposed that plan.

"We're in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country," Day told ESPN. "I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers."

Day noted how the most recent Big Ten expansion added the top teams from the original Pac-12, including the only two -- Oregon and Washington -- that made the four-team CFP and played for national titles. Washington reached the championship game after the 2023 season, falling to Michigan, and Oregon won the Big Ten last fall and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the CFP, losing to Ohio State in a quarterfinal matchup at the Rose Bowl.

"You would have had at least a team or two [in the CFP] from out there," Day said, referring to the original Pac-12. "So it only makes sense when you have 18 teams, especially the quality of teams that you would have [in] that many teams representing the Big Ten."

Day added that a CFP model with more automatic spots will benefit the sport because it will incentivize stronger nonconference scheduling, especially given the discrepancies in conference scheduling models.

All these mf’s are hellbent on destroying CFB in the name of greed

I don't see why someone NCAA or some large body can't implement rules on all this stuff including NIL.

I told ppl on here going back on SOHH that paying players WITH NO COMPETENT PLAN in place would kill cfb.

On topic

SEC deserves 4 teams, Big 10, 3 teams at most.

I used to shyt on Josh Pate for saying he’d take the BCS over the 12+ team playoff….

I might be coming around on that :francis:

I won't go that far but it's clear they ruined something and we're not gonna get it fixed anytime soon. The four team playoff wasn't perfect but worked more than it didn't. Expanding it to 8 teams would have been a solution that satisfied everyone, although IMO that would still allow undeserving teams in.

This shyt should mean something. Being 1st Team All-American means something. They don't just allow anyone in there, you gotta earn it. The top spots for the playoffs should go to teams that won their conference. If you can't win your conference too fukking bad.
:manny:

I also think this would create an easy incentive to actually return to real conferences again. Texas shouldn't be in the fukking SEC. It would be easier to get the Big 12 playoff berth. Pac-12 shouldn't be dead either....let Oregon and those teams fight over that berth. And Notre Dame should be forced to pick a conference. If you aren't in a conference you don't get in, simple as that.

Because there are 50 states with 50 different laws that usurp anything the NCAA can do. Tennessee just passed this law
This law has arrived with things for the NCAA House Settlement being totally up in the air. It would also provide the Tennessee Vols with some protection against potential lawsuits. Essentially, players for the Vols, and the other universities in the state, would be able to take home money from NIL collectives until they're told otherwise 'by federal law, antitrust law, or a valid court order.'

South Dakota filed this lawsuit
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley filed the lawsuit in September on behalf of the University of South Dakota (USD) and South Dakota State University (SDSU), contending that the NCAA breached its own constitution and fiduciary duties by approving the massive settlement without a membership-wide vote. Per Sportico, the state’s argument centers on the claim that schools like USD and SDSU, which were not named defendants in the antitrust cases—House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA, and Carter v. NCAA—are unfairly shouldering the financial burden under the settlement’s damage allocation model.

Mind you, the member institutions voted to allow the very thing TN and SD state AG's have sued the NCAA for. Those in-state schools had their say. Just didn't like being overruled by the other members so they take that shyt to trial.
