LONG BEACH >> The fatal shooting of an alleged burglar by a homeowner in the beach side neighborhood of Bluff Heights early Sunday morning has again stirred a debate over the rights of homeowners to defend themselves.

While the victim’s friends are calling the shooting a murder, many in the neighborhood — all of whom wanted to remain anonymous — said the homeowner was justified in his use of force.

The victim was identified as Ryan Mitchell Anderson, 29, of Long Beach, said Los Angeles County Coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz.

Evidence collected at the scene indicates that Anderson scaled a wall to gain access to the backyard then broke a window to enter the home, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. Police have not said whether Anderson was armed, but he was found with personal property belonging to the resident.

Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of East 3rd Street on Sunday around 3:07 a.m. regarding a residential burglary with an intruder still inside, police said Monday afternoon. Officers arrived in about two minutes of the call and found Anderson inside the home with gunshot wounds, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have not found any connection between Anderson and the residents of the home.

Brenda Tor, 29, of Long Beach, said she knew Anderson left the V Room bar near 4th Street and Alamitos Avenue and was walking back home from a pub crawl early Sunday morning. Anderson had been drinking and decided to walk home instead of drive, she said. He may have become disoriented in his drunken state and stumbled into the wrong home, the friend said.

Authorities have ordered a toxicology report to determine if Anderson was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or both. Those tests normally take several weeks to come back.

“He called his mom a few minutes before (the shooting) happened,” Tor said, her voice choked between sobs. “He was slurring his words. He told her he was having trouble getting back, that he didn’t know where (his house) was.”

Anderson lived near East 3rd Street and Newport Avenue, just under half-a-mile away from the scene of the shooting, she said. Those who knew him are upset that he is being described as a burglar.

Chatter was rampant on social media sites Monday, with dozens both defending Anderson and the homeowner. Police have not made any arrests; once a police investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review, authorities said.

The fatal shooting comes 19 days after an 80-year-old man in the Los Cerritos neighborhood of Long Beach shot and killed a woman he said he found inside his home with a man trying to break into his safe. He said they tackled him, and he broke his collar bone in the scuffle.

The man said he acted in self defense as he shot the woman in the back as she ran from his home, killing her, because the pair had burglarized his home twice before. She had implored him not to shoot, saying she was pregnant, but an autopsy showed no sign of pregnancy.

Gus Adams, the man accused of breaking into the home with the woman, has been charged with murder over her death. His mother, Ruby Adams has been charged with burglary and robbery for her alleged role as lookout in the incident. The two were scheduled to be arraigned in Long Beach on Monday but the court date was moved to Sept. 5.

Anyone with information regarding the burglary and Ryan Anderson’s shooting is urged to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Sean Irving and Peter Lackovic at 562-570-7244. I remember this been posted awhile back. If you're supposedly pregnant, what the fukk are you doing breaking into people's houses?
Trying to get buy money for meth and/or crack.

To me it sounds like he went to the wrong house or whatever cuz he was drunk, maybe tried to break in, maybe didn't try to break in, homeowner shot him, planted some of his belongings on the dude then smashed out a window to make it look like a burg.

Who commits burglaries at 2am ? Nobody does that shyt. Who commits burg drunk? Nobody does that shyt. Who tries to commit burg at a house where people are home? Nobody does that shyt. Something doesn't add up either way.
