Wasn't poppin in 96? I keep seein nikkas sayin that no one was checkin for Hov and nikkas thought it was trash until Jay himself started sayin that it was classic later on. I was born in 95 so it doesn't sound right to me that the GOAT was considered wack :yeshrug:

So is that true or is the booth just bullshyttin?

RD debuted like 27th on the billboard charts... If that doesn't say nikkas wasn't checking for the album back then IDK what will.

I'm pretty sure Jay was like :gladbron: at the free promotion Pac give him on 7 day theory.

Keep in Mind Nas had the number 1 for like a month and Pac sold 5 milli in a matter of months :mjpls:

people who say "reasonable doubt" wasn't poppin are people who were casual rap listeners at the time.

they were either:
a.) kids who were still on some kid chit.
b.) from the burbs
c.) commercial fans who base everything on industry/commercial accolades and propaganda.
d.) all of the above

TYRONE GA!
RD was just another another good album that year and revisionist history by camel.

It was a dope debut and one of the best of 96, but there were MANY albums that cats were checking for over or in addition to RD.

IWW
AAOM
Makaveli
Beats Rhymes and Life
Atliens
The Coming
The Score
Hell on Earth
Ironman
Muddy Waters

It was considered a great album when it dropped, its just that Jay wasn't very popular at the time and there were other artist like Pac, Nas, Wu, and the Fugees, etc. that were really popular during that time so the album wasn't given the same type of love, but the people who did have it and the people that heard it all knew it was dope.

It got 4 mics in the Source (same as IWW)

And the Source also listed it as one of the best albums of 1996 in their '96 Year In Review issue (Jan. '97)

Not a lot of people were checking for it. Like another poster said, there was just so much quality music out that year that RD didn't really stand out. Jay hadn't become a well known artist yet so most people who were checking for it were the people who were "in the know".
