ask yourself as if you were your boss: why do you deserve more money?

try and come up with a good list of examples showing how u are doing good or even stepping it up and how since the company values this type of work ethic you deserve a raise. then when you go talk to your boss you can be like i need a raise, hell say why, you say boom ive done this this this and this.

Start learning everything the new position will need you to know. Most bosses/upper management will be happy to show you so they 1. Push some of their tasks off on you helping you learn or 2. Co-sign you when a position becomes available because they know what you are already trained on. Companies hate having to promote and then train so if you know what you're doing pre-promotion then you have the upper leg on the competition and even if you don't get it. You can take your talents elsewhere and get a better position with all that knowledge.

yeah you are going to have to think about what you have learned on the job. but also think, what skills do i currently have, that i use during my job. instead of just listing skills, list a skill and explain. just dont use buzzwords or words that are too extravagant.. be modest but confident.

1) eg. instead of: good at computers, word, excel.
better: fluent use of windows software including word and excel through daily use at blah blah industries.

eg: good communication skills
better: ability to talk with customers and clients at a personal and professional level because of my time doing _____ at thecoli inc.

2) i suggest putting small 5 or 10 year plan in your resume. right at the bottom show like, next 6 months, find new position within this company at this level, 4 year achieve x number of successful projects, 10 year move up or exit the industry (its ok to say this 10 year down the line). doing this shows you know what you want and the reasons why you need this job now. most employers will be impressed by this.

3) write a small cover letter in the email or paper letter that you give to the manager or boss. just like 5 sentences saying why you want this job. eg. i want more challenge. i want to learn. i feel im being under-utilized. im a good candidate because of blank.

Politics, Politics, Politics.

You may have to kiss ass, do projects that bore you, go above and beyond on tasks that are minescule, ect just to be seen in a more pleasing light.

Go to lunch with those in the department you are trying to get into. Learn as much as you can about not only the company, but also the position.

I work in a corporate environment and it's all about perception. If someone likes you, they will teach you the job. Point. Blank. But if they don't really care for you, you could be the best possible pick and they will not choose yo ass. And also. always "look" like you have your ish together or all of your ducks in a row... whether you do or not. You must be seen as competent in order to get wherever your trying to get.

Fine tune your skillset and market those exact skills on your resume. It's about being marketable above all. Even if it's an internal transfer/lateral move... you still have to make it seem like your shyt dont stink and they would be fools not to hire you.

First, think about why you want to move up. If it's solely for money, I would say focus on starting a small business that you can do on weekends or in the evenings instead. I think that's a better use of your time and energy.

I'm not sure what to tell you because I know the frustration. In the mean time, there are a lot of things you can do to prepare yourself to be an entreprenuer, even if you do don't have a solid idea in place.

What do you like doing most?

I love helping people. I have always wanted to be a professional catalyst. I would love to be able to help people in need find the right resources that they are looking for/in need of. Kind of like a 1 stop shop thingy, but the shopping would be of resources of all kinds.

Not an old head, but one thing that's been told to me by older bruhs and friends is to keep a steady work diary. Whether it be daily, weekly, or bi-weekly. It would probably be too late to start now since you are trying to move up now, but if you get the position, I think it'd be a good idea.

Whenever I take on a project, or I'm planning an event or something. I try to keep a steady diary detailing (a) my accomplishments for the day (b) the processes those accomplishments took and (c) what my next goals are for the next day or week.

Any time I finish working with someone (or like on a monthly/weekly basis depending on how long), I send them the full PDF document, archiving all of the work done and the goals that were accomplished. Did it this past summer at my internship, got some great rewards and reviews for it.

So like if you do get the promotion, start that journal up to present the next time you want a promotion/raise/etc. as proof of what you've done. If you don't get it, start keeping it for the next time you want it.
